Dune: Awakening is a breathtaking triumph that immerses players in the harsh, spice-soaked sands of Arrakis with unparalleled authenticity. Funcom has crafted a survival MMO that shines with its atmospheric worldbuilding, where dynamic sandstorms, towering sandworms, and a vibrant alternate timeline without Paul Atreides create a gripping narrative. The survival mechanics are polished and engaging, demanding strategic resource management—sucking blood from enemies to stay hydrated feels quintessentially Dune. Base-building is intuitive, with the CHOAM Exchange adding a creative twist, while exploration on sandbikes or ornithopters across a vast, vertical map is awe-inspiring. With rich PvE content and thrilling PvP in the Deep Desert, the game hooks both solo players and guilds, delivering a dense, rewarding experience that captures the essence of Frank Herbert’s universe.
The only blemish in this near-perfect package is the melee combat, which feels stiff and undercooked compared to the game’s other strengths. While the slow-blade mechanics and parry system align with Dune’s lore, requiring precise timing to penetrate Holtzman shields, the animations are clunky, and attacks often feel unresponsive, leading to frustrating stun-locks or missed connections. This lack of polish detracts from the otherwise tactical and immersive combat flow, especially in PvE encounters. However, ranged combat is serviceable, and Funcom’s responsiveness to feedback suggests improvements are on the horizon. With a bit more refinement, the melee system could match the brilliance of Dune: Awakening’s sprawling, spice-fueled adventure, making this a must-play for survival fans and Dune enthusiasts alike. 9.5/10.
