I don't think it is a crazy new idea or anything. But is executed incredibly well. Animation work is brilliant, environments are beautiful, it's written well, etc.

There is a really compelling premise here. You have to build everything up from absolute zero. It is sort of like Terraria. You go from a nobody to a god of the realm. It is thoroughly addicting to become more powerful and to make the world your own. Every building made, every path charted, every boss killed is satisfying. What is more is that the devs have big ambitions for this game. I, like many people, am very happy to see where this game goes. It is the 3d Terraria that I have been waiting for. I do have some gripes though. I want to address something before that however.


I feel like, past a certain point, this game will suck the soul out of you if you let it. There is a lot of question as to whether or not a game should be hard or easy. But, in my opinion, all a game needs to be is rewarding. Time and time again, gamers have shown that they will bash their heads against the wall and get their ♥♥♥♥♥ flattened if it means chasing that next dopamine rush or sense of fulfillment. But consider that you will be meaninglessly hauling metals back and forth, searching for the spawn of that *one* boss, and getting murked by ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ elite seekers time and time again. These aren't even hard, they are trivial. And the game does not satisfy enough to make me look past those issues. I am left frustrated by the time I get to the mountain biome. Who gives a ♥♥♥♥ about another point of armor. I want faster boats, more convenient forms of transportation, better ways to find the boss, more options to fight the enemy in clever ways. But it doesn't matter what part of the game you are at, farming bronze will always be tedious. Give a reason for me to care, basically. And so I am left with the impression that the more you put into the game, the less you will get in return. I *will* conquer Valheim, and all of its tedious soul sucking mechanics, *if* there is actually a reason to. Until then, you will get slapped across the face time and time again, and not by the game's difficulty, but by the game's inability to let you manage that difficulty.

It is pretty simple at this point in development. I think the appeal is just to play with whatever toys the developers decided to give to you. The most interesting of these toys being the npcs. Naturally, seeing how these guys create their tiny little civilization before dropping a tsar bomba on them is fun.

However, it can get old quick though since none of it is particularly dynamic. In my opinion, nearly every toy they give you is nothing more than a gimmick. Nevertheless,I think there is something really special here. It definitely needs some more time in the oven, but the recipe is very good. So, as an early access title, do I recommend it? ehh, if you are into these games. If not, let it sit a little while longer in my opinion, but there is something definitely interesting here, which is why I'm still recommending it.
