It puzzled me for a while too, but the secret is that you have to do the whole thing really fast. You've got about two seconds to follow the whole line.

On the subject of excess_construct, the sketch next to the bench diagram in the secret room is a clue. Look for where else in the map you see an arch like that. Specifically, look on top. Good luck.
