Early Access Review
Almost expected a clone of the trending group item-stashing games like Lethal Company or Content Warning (two I also enjoy, but admit they almost NEED a group to play with) but this game is PHENOMENAL so far.
Played with two friends last night and we could NOT stop laughing, and playing the single-player mode today - which afaik is definitely adjusted in difficulty.
My only real complaint/request to the devs is to perhaps work on the way the AI on the enemies in multiplayer seem to puppyguard/linger around where you specifically are.
Other than that I cant think of any issues at all that I've got with this refreshing take on the haul-and-run game genre and I cant wait to see where the devs take it!
10/10 humor
10/10 game design
9/10 enemy difficulty
100/10 good time

best sims game from a gameplay perspective, just wish they'd do a rework and update graphics/integration a bit

I keep flip flopping on on it, because the game is so beautiful and fun honestly, but the DLC has only been affordable for what you get in them during sales or just on third-party sale websites, among a litany of other issues.

The bugs/crashes are so effing annoying:

-the camera will get stuck moving one direction if you're terraforming
-you can place /some/ items from DLC you don't have, but that closes out of your game if you didn't KNOW it wasn't a pack you owned, reverting you to an auto-save after prompting you to buy the packs you don't own even if it wasn't properly marked and hidden with the rest of your non-purchased content blueprints, undoing whatever work was between that autosave and that exit without asking if you even want to do that
- the undo button breaks your terraforming down in some poly based level, so if you do anything beyond minor terraforming and realize you aren't happy with that, you don't usually even have the chance to get rid of it without spending more in-game money
- the terraforming brush size just doesn't work. When i set it to the largest option, it stays at 4.

Not mentioning how hideous some paths, barriers and other items can be if placed on anything aside from flat ground, how punishing the game is for placing the necessary electric and water utilities every 10 meters of the zoo, and how impossible it is to keep your zoo grounds clean without an unreasonable janitorial staff and path-clogging trash cans.

Also, the wall you hit with enjoying the game comes up on you FAST. The micro-managing of the game is just ridiculous, and only barely resolved recently with the ability to limit the number of exhibit creatures, but you're still responsible for keeping track of and dealing with each and every individual animal, putting them on birth control, and selling the offspring so your in-game economy doesn't take a massive nosedive into debt because guests don't like that. not to mention that, if you don't want 42 mechanics running around the zoo while things still break regardless, you need to work hard to partition the zoo into manageable work-groups and set the checkup time on everything to about half the standard duration.
More of this game is spent counteracting the tailspin of micromanagement than there is to the fun parts that include terraforming, learning about animals, building unique items, etc.

THAT BEING SAID, the game is fun!! until you hit that wall, run into a crash, or find yourself plagued with bugs that make you want to say eff this and try another day. The animals are cute, what you can do with building is wildly unique and cute (when the game works with you), and the game does a nice job of educating you on animals and their typical environment in a relatively passive way that flows with gameplay.
DLC just needs to be like 30-50% cheaper at a reasonable level, and the devs need to polish more things out.

TL;DR About as unpolished as some of the jagged, low-poly items you'll find in-game, even though DLC is way overinflated for the content received. Micro-management makes mid-to-late game-play unbearable. In many ways, Planet Coaster runs laps around Planet zoo. Except for optimization, as usual.

As far as gameplay goes, its eh. its okay if you have friends, but other than that youre not enjoying the game as much as youre avoiding people who are either too stupid to walk in a straight line or people who are fueled only by satan's thirst for blood and grab onto you with their little snot-covered grubby little nubbins and man-handle you off the nearest edge so they can advance. even then, its a game you play maybe for an hour or two TOPS before you have to exit for your own mental stability.

Also, it took me 79 hours of mostly solo play to win a single game and from what ive heard from a handful of people, thats the norm.

I bought this game when it actually cost money, and back then cosmetics are what made it kinda rad! You earned crowns via achievements or winning or leveling up, the cosmetics shop updated every day or so and you spent the coins and crowns on neat skins. As soon as it became free to play, then the crowns got dumped and turned into coins, and they replaced crowns with a new currency you could pay real money for. and that's how you get anything in game except for like five or six really mid-tier cosmetics. those are for the coins they converted all of the crowns into being.

but hey, its free now. so its not like its some tragic loss if you hate it.

Im not gonna lie, this game is way cooler than I anticipated. Get it on sale and find a friend or two, or join random open convoy servers. I've laughed more at this game than I have ever

i wanted to write something witty but i wont, this is the creme de la creme of sandbox games imo. the mod compatibility further enhances that. idc if its between getting yourself groceries for the week or this game. get the game and nourish yourself off of that. you wont regret.

really not a great game. the entire game is really disorienting and hard on the eyes, the tank decor has absolutely no variation in decorations still (saw a 2 year old review, figured they changed that. they didnt) and the models all look really low quality. not worth 15 bucks on sale, definitely not worth 25 any other day. barely a 5$ game.
