This games Dev team (or lack thereof) is a joke. Valve is an abusive father who attempts to maintain rapport with half hearted and two-faced cosmetic updates and cookie-cutter responses to actual problems. They are functionally ignoring this game, sure, potentially to work on something "bigger and better" but this is just a cope. This game has and surely will continue to make valve loads of money. The game is almost never not in the top 10 most played games on steam. Tf2 has a healthy and populated economy which undoubtedly even in its old age brings in countless dollars. Yet in spite of all this the company refuses to address serious and game-breaking issues that have plagued this game for going on two years. It is a joke. The solutions they provide-reporting profiles, accounts, players in game etc- do nothing and when you reach out to ask how or why you get the same two responses, copy pasted over and over again. The identities of the bot hosters is known, for gods sake half of them advertise it themselves. Bot accounts don't get banned, and if they do it almost seems as if it was done on accident. Every "fix" they have offered has been half-hearted, half-baked, and completely inexcusable. I love this game I truly do, I believe it has a place even now god knows how many years after release. It is unique and insanely fun. Yet it is plagued by an awful/nonexistent dev team, infrequent/nonexistent updates, and a community wholly in denial about the company that owns it and their own interactions. People who play this game are incredibly toxic and hopelessly bitter, its sad to see such a beautiful and amazing game killed by all those involved.
Valve should not ignore this game, it even now has great potential.
The community is lackluster and incredibly toxic.
I cannot in any way recommend this game in its current state. Or in any state it has been for the last 4 years.

It is truly a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ shame.

To simply echo every other review

-♥♥♥♥♥♥ super linear story with meaningless "choices"
-eh super basic gameplay
-basic abandonment of all the RPG elements made standard by previous games
-super lazy and greedy design and managment. between ♥♥♥♥♥♥ DLCs to paid mods. little to no flavour
-near complete abandonment of certain lore elements
- et cetera et cetera et cetera
Just buy fallout NV, you'll have so much more fun

- player who bought both the anthology and the pipboy edition.

Without the mods this game is boring. Annoying and way way way way too expensive to ever be worth it.

Holy f*ck it's so good.

Verdun is difficult. It has a player base of highly skilled people. It is unforgiving and in the heat of battle, it's hellish and... it's great.
The gameplay is perfect, the realism is superb. You shoot someone? They die. Someone shoots you? you die. regardless of weapon or level, guns feel powerful as they should. Your character experiences shellshock, speaks in whatever language they're supposed to, and when you're shot, you don't comically ragdoll, you stop, fall and curl up like a human would. The MGs are snipers without scopes, in that they have a huge range, but they're heavy and you can't run around with them(like irl). The mp18 is sh*t (like it is irl) but you can still use it. The pistols are slow to reload but perfect for storming trenches. The semi-auto rifles are good, but clumsy and few and far between. In the main gamemode, scopes are rare, and only maybe 4 people on the entire sever of like 30 people can have them. The sheer amount of weapons, attachements, uniforms and squads is amazing.
But the best part of Verdun for me is the attention to detail. The worldspace is absolutely beautiful. Every map feels real, you find evidence of people actually living, fighting and dying in the trenches. Graves, small kitchens and beds, NCO quaters, makeshift foxholes, books and journals strewn about. Every corner of the map has a a unique and interesting feel. But that's not all, Verdun is realistic not only in mechanics but in history. The guns are well-modeled, well-researched authentic weapons of the time. The uniforms are authentic, the battles & maps, the ranks and commands, everything. It's all accurate.

If you want an incredibly fun, unforgiving, historically-accurate attrition simulator, Verdun is perfect.

in 2020 the game is still utterly amazing! loving every minute of it.
