I'm coming from Helldivers 2. and I honestly recommend anyone even slightly interested coming from Helldivers 2 gives Helldivers 1 a chance.

It's very much almost like a condensed, compacted form of Helldivers 2. It's faster, more focused and a lot more teamplay oriented.

While of course, it's a top down twin stick shooter oriented around couch co-op, and for some people that might not sound appealing, but honestly it makes the game feel a lot more... cozy? And forcing the team together on one screen compared to it's sequel means it's cooperative play is basically mandated unlike Helldivers 2 where it's more of a vague suggestion.

In many ways, Helldivers 1 is a more stable, fleshed out and rock solid title than Helldivers 2.

Don't get me wrong, Helldivers 2 is GREAT. It's one of my all time favorite games, but it's also often sometimes exhausting to play and it's foundations are often less than solid with general jank. A result of a small team taking such a ambitious, experimental approach to a game at the scale of Helldivers 2.

Helldivers 1 is a good refresher from when you feel like you want to put Helldivers 2 down for the rest of the day and play something else. You still get that democracy spreadin' itch scratched, but it's a bit comfier to play.

It also feels a bit more rewarding to progress in, with a generally more honed in progression system that is somewhat less reliant on paid content. The whole upgrade system alone is actually mostly a step-up from Helldivers 2.

As much as I love Helldivers 2, it's progression system is borderline meaningless and the only upgrades to your arsenal are new stratagems, weapon attachments and ship upgrades. That's excluding warbond content which is all technically "free" but honestly it might as well be all paid.

Here, of course a lot of content is nailed behind the DLC, but the DLC is cheaper than all of Helldivers 2's content all up even when it's not on sale I believe, and it also goes on sale fairly often. I bought all the DLC for like 15 bucks on sale. And the game itself usually goes on sale often too for a few buckaroos, unlike Helldivers 2 which will set you back 40 bucks 9/10.
