Finally, an additional means of scraping my idiot teammates off the walls. Even with it being a shoot > reload weapon, this will come in handy.

I got this game for my birthday yesterda, and played it a bit while drunk. Now I'm sober and I played it some more.

I mean no exaggeration, this is one of the best games I ever played. I already loved the rubberhosing animation of cuphead. I was very bad at Cuphead, I'm a lot better at this.

When it comes to criticisms I have 3, one of which is not even a criticism, and one is forgiven easily. For one, items need you to be right on top of them, which can make it easy to miss stuff if you're not paying attention. Second is the combat animations are great, I just wish I had more time to look at them, because combat can be quite punishing. There's also the matter that the investigation is kind of fixed. I can't come to my own conclusions, but honestly, this is more of a shooter than a detective game.

Now the honeymoon effect is gone, I have another genuine criticism that makes this game frustrating to play: some of the sidequests have objectives that are pretty easy to miss. That is not a problem, but the game does not allow you to replay the level or backtrack too far. I have screwed up 2 side quests because I didn't want to look up walkthroughs and finish them on my own steam, and I didn't play the levels like surgery. I don't think that's a dealbreaker, but it's something you should know before buying.

But for the rest I have nothing but praise for this game. I mentioned before that the animations are amazing. The writing is cheesy (even the main character is named after a cheese), which I'm sure is the point, but the story itself is played pretty straight which I appreciate a lot.

The shooting actually handles really well. You're fighting 2d assets, and usually when that happens I find it hard to tell whether my shots are actually landing. Mouse: P.I. For Hire leaves no room fo confusion (also the death animations are great).

Music is incredible, and I honestly regret not getting the soundtrack when I bought it. It's very moody and fits well into the noire aesthetic of the game. This ties well into how despite it being funny, the game takes itself serious. I don't feel like an idiot for allowing myself to be immersed.

I personally always found that games set in a 3d world but with 2d assets like this can be pretty disorienting, but I mentioned before that damage feedback keeps you from getting annoyed. Enemies are also highlighted whenever they're present, which keeps you from missing them.

Then there's the writing. I don't need to belabour the obvious here, this game has a lot of fun with its setting. You'd be hard pressed to go 2 minutes without running into a cheese or mouse pun. Like for example, it's not a coincidence that Jack Pepper uses a Mauser. Whether you find that cringe is up to you (you are against whimsy), but I find it very amusing. They're also written in a way that it doesn't take you out of the immersion. I wouldn't go as far as to call the game edgy, but it's definitely moody, and the silly stuff doesn't take me out of it.

I also can't leave this unsaid: The tailpicking is quick and easy. I am so sick of hacking/lockpicking minigames that are stupid puzzles that are a waste of my time. The one in this game can be done in less than 10 seconds, and the only thing it requires you to do is plan ahead.

I also can't ignore the animation. I love looking at it, and I understand this game is pretty long, which gives me more time to enjoy every bit of it. Things like the pistol crumpling when you reload, the varnisher vial spinning, and even the bullets in the corner laughing and smiling at you when you fire. I have a big dumb grin on my face the entire time I play this.

First of all: Sucked in, Nacon

Second, I love this game, the atmosphere, the themes, and basically everything else. One thing that threw me for a loop is when Bobby M (monke) Throgmorton said that bullets and medical supplies were the currency, it felt like there would be stores that would trade with you, which I'd like to see in the sequel.

I also like how this game makes you read maps and doesn't just tell you where to go with an annoying location marker.

It's like reverse christmas where instead of coming in through the chimney to deliver gifts like santa claus in a sleigh, I come in through the front door and destroy everything on foot.

Early Access Review
"Lazy what kind of defense is this?"

"I AM the defense!"

(Seriously though, add some more turrets. Hard to call it tower defense when I don't get any towers)

Serious non joke review: Incredible game, a nice mix of rogue like or lite (not sure which, I'm not a journo) that has that addicting gradual progression mixed with a lot of bullets flying. It's not too hard, but not too easy either. My jokey comment still stands, I think turrets should be available way sooner, because the heat exhaust meta gets kinda stale.

Some more visual flair could also be nice (flashier muzzle flashes and the gun moving more when you fire), but a layman like me will say that and think that's at all easy.

There's the obvious of multiplayer, but that's in the works, and I'd also like a sandbox mode where I can place as many turrets as I want.

Still, the base game is great, and it's worth your while. This unironically competes with Sanctum 2 for title of best tower defense/shooter hybrid.

I got this while I was bedridden from a medical intervention. Without noticing I played for 10 yours straight, and I was playing totally alone. Would recommend.
