General review of the game:

The game is definitely fun to play, the quality of life features definitely take a lot of the hassle out of the game compared to previous ones. I do think that these more recent games have started to spoon feed players more though by removing a lot of the grind

(For layered armors, grinding up the botanist, deliveries for camps, etc. which can be achieved much more easily now).

That being said, the game play is definitely the highlight, combat is super fun and each weapon I've played is satisfying. The focus mechanic is the best thus far and feels the best to play in comparison to the clutch claw or wire bugs.

In terms of story, its definitely a step up from previous games but I'm not sure if I prefer it or not since there was a whole lot of yapping by NPCs (Just Nata) that I didn't really care for. Near the end of the story was really cool though.

I do wish there was more endgame content. I'll update this portion once a few updates are through and new event quests are available. Currently I have just been grinding out every item as well as gold crowns but aside from that there isn't much to do with side stuff like the fishing and endemic life. Would love to see housing like from Iceborne again!

Also not sure how I feel about the skip at the end of quests, I miss not having post-hunt interactions with other players, now its straight to skipping and you don't really interact with people in the hub except posting meme stickers.

PS: Monster hunter world + iceborne is way better to play currently.

I don't like the fact that this game never goes on sale but...

Great game, both mentally stimulating and mentally numbing

Played the game solo and thoroughly enjoyed. I found the story telling for the first half to be pretty terrible but certain aspects of the dialogue made up for it. The second half of the game was much better, with the story being meaningful. The overall gun-play was superb, I felt like this was something that was better than its precursor(Borderlands 2).

The DLCs are fun but they are priced weirdly now and its not very transparent what you are receiving when you purchased them.

A downside I felt with the game was that some maps had large empty spaces or didn't have enough fast-travel or way points to travel between which made traversing the game tedious(even with a vehicle).

Also please remove Ava from the game lol, I find her dialogue annoying...

What am I suppose to do as a returning player?

Edit, this is for those returning to the game:

Booted the game after years, got in and skipped New Light since I've previously done it.

Got catch up gear but couldn't queue for any missions because I was missing a completed mission.

Tried to get my seasonal artifact but the portal beside Mara Sov was also missing.

Turns out the problem was to reboot the game two more times just to see different boot up cut scenes and get automatically put into Light Fall and the new Season missions.

Yeah not worth lol

It'd be better to spend your time watching paint dry. This game was fun throughout the years but Nexon's really bled the game out.

In-depth review

Disclaimer: Only played reboot and never touched main servers except Windia back in the day.
Despite this game being one of my more enjoyed MMOs I have a hard time recommending this game due to its inherent flaws. Reboot servers are good because they don't enforce pay-to-win mechanics outside of the seasonal/battle passes that requires daily logins and purchasing god-tier(vacuum) pets for grinding. The bulk of the micro-transactions come from cosmetics and I think that is a relatively fair method of monetization for the player.

Now the reason why I have a hard time recommending the game is the sheer grind of the game and how much it enforces you to do your "chores" to progress. When I was playing, the feeling of obligation to complete my dailies to gain money to progress sucked the enjoyment of the game. The more characters/boss mules I built, the more dailies I had to complete to cap out. This especially becomes a nuisance when it can take up to 5-10 minutes to clear a certain bosses. So basically progressing in the game rewards you with more "grind/work" rather than speeding it up. I also find bossing not very enjoyable because solo bossing is the most optimal way to complete them as doing it in a party results in splitting the money pool you receive. Even though people say this is a social game, so much of the content is actually done alone that it just feels single player. Sure people chill in certain areas, use a megaphone and chat but there is no inherent game mechanic that makes you really feel like you're playing with someone else. Even Ursus, people just come and go. You literally interact with the NPCs more than the players there.

The base game was cleaned up really well. The DLC however still has bugs and stuff so it broke immersion at times. And imo the DLC was not as spectacular as the base game content. Would recommend though cause the new area was cool, some missions were genuinely fun and it did add content to your playthrough.

Yeah its pay-to-win, its a huge time sink, has a mediocre story, riddled with bugs and de-sync problems. But the game looks pretty I guess? + the dopamine hit with the virtual gambling goes hard

Honest review though.

If you are looking for a game to invest a lot of time into this game is not bad. I've spent a couple bucks into the game to get some essential items, but I've only put in the money for what I think the game is worth. Getting a game at this quality for a couple bucks on steam sale is very good as is.

If you are playing as a free-to-play or light spender. Understand the mindset you should have going into the game is not to try to reach true end game. It takes a very long time or swipes to be able to accelerate to that level. While the events are super generous at accelerating your progress through the game or providing quality of life stuff. The overall nature of the enhancing system is abysmal. Just play the game at a crawls pace and for me it made it much more enjoyable, not worrying about the race to the end-game and just playing it with people. Enjoy the life-skills and other complex mechanics. I consider BDO more of a social game cause I find myself often chatting with random passerbys when doing world bosses, with my guildies when doing guild quests or strangers participating in-game events. This game is very generous towards casual players with returning rewards, etc so I recommend it.

I think the biggest pro about the game is the dailies don't seem so much as a chore. Compared to Lost Ark or Maplestory, the more characters you have the more "work" you have to do with dailies and stuff. BDO is the exact opposite where having more characters makes your daily play more convenient and is one of the main reasons why I chose to play over the others.

Edit: Had a lot of problems with customer service and the security of the game. Made it less enjoyable to play
