12 years ago, I got into VNs, with Katawa Shoujo being my first VN at the age of 14. I was hit with one of the best Indie games made by ragtag group of talented individuals who saw Honjou Raita's doujin one off page titled Katawa Shoujo and specifics of it. And this game made me meet a character who I hold dear to this day and have a hard time forgetting, and I'm happy I never did.
The visual novel explored a normal 18 year old named Hisao who experienced late stage heart disease and suffered a heart attack. Through this experience, Hisao is utterly changed physically and mentally as he has to go to a school for "crippled kids". It is through this that Hisao meets one of the greatest cast of characters and undergoes change either physically or mentally as a person. He either takes up sign language so he can talk with his friends and girlfriend when their interpreter isn't there. He learns to think about the future and to be open with people as he learns to accept his situation and the people who care and try to be open with him about themselves and want to learn about him. To even the characters overcoming the loss of a loved one to learning that they are wanted, they are beautiful, and that being with them has changed our main character for the better. To having some of the craziest and most enjoyable conversations with a unique art student and legally blind Harry Potter look alike.
The game's story beats are relaxing to and comfortable to being hilarious to being deep and emotional. Its one of the very few games I have played in my life to have made me tear up and or cry. This is also one VN that is considered by many, that downloading the 18+ patch is needed to fully experience the story, since the scenes are rather intimate and important to each character's route. Hanako, a character I care a lot about's sex scene is important as it shows a sign of trust between the 2 characters. Hisao then starts to question what they are afterwards feeling scared and anxious and worried that it may not become what he hopes and that he had ruined everything to only find out that, she felt the same way and wanted to become closer to him, to get to know him, but also show him that she's stronger than he thinks she is... and so much more. Shizune's route is another one that is rather story important, too. But the jist of it is that they have desires and the right to experience a normal human life. That their disabilities are there but it doesn't make them less human. They are more than their disabilities and the game portrays this incredibly well.
One other note I would like to point out is that the music is incredible. It fits every beat of the story and doesn't ever feel like its overstaying its welcome. A lot of the tracks are calm and relaxing and aren't truly grandiose and loud. There is no real state of urgency when a lot of them play. Its a game of healing and not giving up on life and finding that motivation to continue. The music is also royalty free, so you can play it on stream, in a video, etc and you won't get punished for using it.

In short, I fully recommend this Visual Novel, because had a strong impact on me 12 years ago and had an even stronger impact when I decided to reread it this year. Everything is as I remembered it, happy; relaxing; sad; and welcoming. The game is an ode to humanity. Live your best life, do your best, and just because you have a disability doesn't mean your life is over.
