TL/DR: If you want a Fire Emblem-esque game, but wanted directional tactics, and a less of a "nobility is the best thing ever!" style story that FE tends to lean into, then I'd recommend.

Here's some quick gameplay info:
There are 20 chapters with a prologue, there are 2 promotions, that happen at level 10 and 20. There's OPTIONAL permadeath. Gameplay-wise, this feels very Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, as several of the classes have an overlapping promotion option. However the level 20 promotions that give you an extra turn if you kill someone in a particular way is probably the best.

Story-wise:
The plot seems ... like there's 3 arcs. The "Oh wow, this country is great!" *shuffle the skeletons under the bed* arc. The "Oh man, the plot happened to us!" arc. and the "♥♥♥♥ around, find out!" arc. On a macro level, it feels like a 1/2 the story doesn't really matter, as when we are introduced to a character at the beginning of the 3rd story arc, that just dominates the game to such an extent that makes you wonder why you did the 2nd arc at all? The major check boxes from arc 1 definitely translate to arc 3, but then you kinda do the thing that the story character tries to fight against in arc 3. (Recruiting Quincy, the "Iron Maiden" is done via chattel slavery, including LITERALLY BRANDING HER, don't worry, when her time as an slave is over, she decides to stay...) The game kinda walks the line of based and lib pilled. I went with the based ending, but as others say, there's not really a reason to do the other ending? But if you want to experience the full plot, make an alternate save slot when you get to 19/20.

Do you enjoy an addictive skinner box that will soon be mildly obsolete?

Then here's the game!

I mostly play vanilla, and it's fun. Though mildly infuriating.

Good luck with the massive learning curve. If you look up a guide, check to see what difficulty it's written for.

It's a decent enough emulator, and there are a lot of fun ROMhacks that make old games enjoyable in new ways!

Major downside though, saving the game. Both in-game saves and save states neither seem to work. The only thing that does work is Quick Save/Load.

Which is mighty unfortunate for playing an RPG

The game is a classic, truly fantastic. Great gameplay and mechanics.

The only issue for me is... if you're achievement hunting, be prepared to play it twice. Game can definitely be beaten on Hard the first time around (helps I've played it before), but you won't get the 'kill 2000 monsters' achievement. I went out of my way to kill everything, but didn't camp areas where monsters may of respawned... soooo Eff me I guess?

Do you enjoy turn based grueling hardship?

Do you enjoy top-down teambuilding of up to 26 people?

Do you enjoy low fantasy epics where you get to personally experience and drive the course of the narrative?

Then this is the game for you!

But also, get the Legends Mod. Highly recommended.
