For the record,
I like this game, it's a historic piece that puts things in perspective, the brutal difficulty, attention to detail(with some detriment because allies lack good heavy tanks), the scale (at the cost of hassle), each frame/pause a painting with a story, the punishing combat, a lot more focus on realism than the much more prevalent arcade-y approach to the genre but never in my right mind would I suggest someone plays this game unless I knew the person like my own brother.

Innovative when it released but today all that remains is obtuse mechanics, clunky controls, unreliable intel depth, hostile and obscure event script with triggers that require that you make a lot of different save branches, purposefully unbalanced, way too much for the modern gamer experience.
8/10 when it released for wargame enthusiasts, 2/10 for the modern audience, so middle it out, detract 1 point of nostalgia and we'll land at 4/10 if you like these types of games.

I'd never suggest this game as the entry for the genre/series due to the evolving standards of wargames, at the time this game came out there weren't a lot of games either with complexity, the scale or looking quite as good as SS1 with considerable effort put in enough to make a now charming game for those that remember and back then definitely the best RTT entry at the time aside from RTS.

TL;DR
Skip this one atleast for now and play Sudden Strike 2 if you must as a good starting point and come back if you're in for a more grueling experience or try the mixed bag that is future entries

Got a key from a ko-fi supporter but would've bought it anyways especially with the sale at release and since I've played around 8 hours in the demo beforehand.

Dystopian depiction of a merciless world that's being stretched at its seams in a war for and against the continuity of everyone's existance within the city scrambling to hold their head above the water.

Cortex, ever authoritarian but protecting of anyone within, demands that every cog of the society must work without fail lest they're marked for limitation as means to make the city persist and fight on against the Rot, other than that, you don't know too much about them perhaps only Consul knows... Curious how the shells we make look identically as ones that rain on us hmm?

The Scum, a variety of vandals, rot fanatics and traitors that demand anarchy and wish a brutal end to anything standing in the way of their personal grudges against the Cortex or be it the Doomsday cult of the Rot.

Along with the Neutral fates you will definitely find a place that suits you as long as you get used to dying and find the obscure aspect of the game charming. Heavily suggesting the use of the wiki and asking for advice from other people and being in touch with updates, Good luck out there and try to stick to high population servers, hopefully we'll get to punish the vile section of the multiplayer community eventually.

This game along its first version as a source mod has never been outdone in the Asymmetrical Teams PvP FPS RTS department even till this very day(feel free to mention NS-likes in the comments).

If you can get a whole lobby running of not-so-jaded players that don't use the game as the space to air their unwarranted political opinions on the daily (as per usual of an unmoderated community), it's definitely going to be a blast.

I wouldn't expect that devs will try to make a sequel to it any time soon because of how heavy the burden would be, let's cherish what we got instead of a half-raw third installation that there could've been and the title can rest easy until Unknown Worlds regains the spark and feels that they are up to the task of making a successor, even if it has to be a spiritual one.

May this gem shine unforgotten and be a case study of how these type of games are done.. atleast in the gameplay sense.

A decent game and a great looking one at that but a little disappointing because it lacks of complexity/depth for that original price tag but I've enjoyed it for what it is.

The ground missions seem barebones, could've used some variance to them with some kind off an active/choice element to them both lore/gameplay-wise. Honestly just letting you choose from directions where the ground team goes would be a lot more engaging, could've spiced up some events with ground control overview.
More creativity in the re-run/loop mechanics would've been grand, I know that RNG deaths are kind of inseperable from the game's theme/story but surely it could've used some touch up off the top of my head like run mutations, multiple special officers, debuffs on top of it that would benefit different builds, full on pointbuy system for your ship that lets you make or modify your own ship before deploying etc.

Get it on sale like I did!

This would be a negative review if this wasn't a free game. Especially for how it executes microtransactions.
For the record I spent like... 5 dollars on this.

This is a decent game concept hidden under many issues steming from microtransactions having an impact on ranked matches and or community events that are plagued with random matches of horrendous(and hilarious) deck/player level unbalance or some decks being really inept in the later ranks without many rare cards etc.
Black hole for real money, just like any of your standard digital card games.

Why low hours?
I've played way more of this game on my phone than my PC since the low hours, I'd probably have like.. few hundred hours in since I did tend to obsess myself with playing it whenever I was going back from school/on the bus, basically on-the-go.

This is a good enough game for what it gives

You can get that early satisfaction boost from beating bots to a pulp. Though same-level card matchups with players are prefered and often enough you can get some.
This game provides enough content and wins for players in the early game to get them hooked.Early ranked matches are filled with bots indicated by Player-XXXX<-numbers in the name(and for people that wait too long for a queue). This is a good thing. If we're honest,a minor win against a bot is 100% better than waiting for a player.

Game itself has a really cool concept, your minions are capable of movement and taking ground to use as place for reinforcements,a game of pulling rope basically.
Although a squandered concept by some decks to a degree.
I can't count the times when a swarm deck tried to.. well.. swarm me for me to just say no(Tribes of Shadowfen/the crow/frog faction) and poison their last row and just do the same but swarming their GATE row that they have almost no way of countering aside from few cards. Although occasionaly you can run into decks that are a real pain to work through and dominating the map doesn't actually have any benefit aside from maybe the first row from the enemy castle.

Mid-game is usually playable F2P and you tend to come across same-level players untill you run into a rank-reset.
Even with all off the microtransaction issues coming out of leveling up the cards, this game is suprisingly still playable if you know few things first and are willing to grind out your ass.
So first few weeks after rank reset is usually hell so you better lay low for a bit with your 2-3 level rank cards as the gods among men eradicate the ladder with their high level researched meta decks and make you wonder why.

Some decks/cards/factions are innately required way more effort/work than some.
That is without getting into the habit of paying real world money just for a few {{UNIQUE}} X-card.png since grinding them out to become competitive(Which is hardly possible) even in the mid-game would just defeats the point since most cards are quite poorly scaled up for their cost.

TL;DR for the sake of people trying to get into the game.
This game runs on borrowed time for everyone looking for a reliable F2P experience.
Early to Mid game? Go ahead and experiment, play F2P. Late game? Hell no,it's like punching a player across the screen just for having a lower player/deck level you better get used to getting rid of niche cards, conform to the meta plus being up against decks with higher level but also higher HP points of the "Castle" depending on the level of the player(This ultimately defeats the point of higher level players using lower level cards since the HP on the castle could easily decide between a game lost or won).

The soundtrack, even though there's like... what the main-menu track and battle track? Suprisingly it doesn't get old because different faction landscapes provide a variety of good ambient sound effects to the already decent battle sountrack.

This is an outdated review,pre-minecraft edition

What made me enjoy it
So I played F2P Nexon zombies for around 915 hours because it was really fun and dynamic, the knockback/stagger mechanic was the saving grace for this ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. Classic weapons are generally useless as means to effectively kill zombies they didn't generate enough damage or knockback though could've still see usage as support weapons.

Personally used the M3 shotgun, it had devastating knockback, changing the game on some maps with elevation into something that most cs1.6 zombie maps lacked and that is MOBILITY and DYNAMIC gameplay, there you just sat in a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ tunnel and either cheesed the whole round with overpowered modded weapons/utilities like for example shields/armor from infection, one hit KO guns, laser mines etc etc.

While Nexon Zombies had multiple functional hideouts that could be invaded from every side by either zombies grenade-jumping or using some versatile abilities to infect humans, the skill was utmost needed from everyone present in that hideout doing their own job, securing flanks, air-shooting the jumpers. If a zombie got into the hideout most of the time you had to abandon it to survive which was very risky, it was a very good game mode along other fantastic modes like "Hidden" and others like Gun Game.

What made me dislike it
The only gripe I had with this game was it's P2W status that I managed to somewhat circumvent not paying a dime through crafting sub-par weapons and taking part in some events that awarded me "good weapons" that barely made me able to keep my head above the water though still not enough to match p2w level which did put me off many a times from continuing to play, nonetheless I kept playing for the glorious mini-games some of which become unplayable with P2W players further diminshing my will to play because of the rapidly increasing difficulty for F2P gamers across all game modes to enjoy the game because of the power scaling issues originating from devs adding zombies into the game that ignored the basic mechanics(knockback/stagger) for the sake of keeping up with the P2W players.

Opinion
Why I'm not recommending this game?
The reason I'm not recommending this game is because I've ran into the issue of the Devs deleting accounts wholesale with only 13 days to opt-in to save my account because of the server migration from Nexon EU to Nexon KR that was aforementioned in apparently 2 months worth of notices about it,I hadn't read them or payed them any mind because I thought I'd be able to stop that process when it's taking place, and when the last 13 days struck... I just wasn't playing it,and neither do I see any sense in going back to it, especially with the apparent design choices stamping out any regular players that don't want to pay for the newest guns/lootboxes etc.

Would I recommend this game for F2P?
Only if you like the minigames, they're cool though some still might have the p2w aspect,I don't imagine the p2w situation getting better from when I left(Or get used to the much more unsatisfying grind than from back then).

Would I recommend this game for P2W
Sure,go on ahead,it's still a cool game for those people.

Somewhat Spoilery?

*Figuring out with the manual how to pick stuff up,glancing on other categories*
It took me about half an hour to understand that... I just have to NOT get into that one room with a zombie in it after this whole time trying to murder it with a torch(because you know, learning the basics of the combat rough is okay, that's how I rationalized it,saddly it's all just in a corridor, *lures it into where you spawned*,still dies.. whatever, atleast got some basics down)...
Now I really want to read the manual "Oh... so there's some neutral beings here!" still somewhat not believing the manual because of the very first encounter presented in the trailer on the steam store* I guess if it just doesn't outright rush me... it's okay, occasionally I left the door somewhat open so it went through pushing it aside...
Suprisingly.. It didn't murder me *cue another 5 minutes being wary of it...* getting one room ahead.. there's another zombie,he seems as nice as the other...*keeping the approach of always being very distant from it,generally being a possy not making the eye-contact*
Okay... there's ANOTHER zombie standing in the middle of the corridor... It has a black vest and looks pretty bad... "Is it going to charge me? I'm not looking at it and I'm also a good distance afar from it.. so why would it?" Lo and behold, it rushes me.
"I guess there are more aggresive types? Atleast they have different appearance"
Another time around sees that it has engaged other zombies.... "Hmmm... okay"
Sees a desolate zombie with a sledgehammer... I.. I want that sledgehammer *cue 5 minutes of making makeshift barricades to make it trip every step of the way. it dies, makes me very injured* *finds out there was a sledgehammer in another room* "... *sigh* guess that's a redo!"

I love this game and it's definetly something new that I'll see to the end because of just how you can play it,either going solo and easily avoiding trouble, or bunching up with your buddy Derrin(he's forbidden by me to use two-handed weapons and I left him with just a spear and a shield to avoid the teamdamage and stop worrying if he gets a tad bit overzelous I gave him the best loot I've found,of course saving the two-handers for me,it's overhead and a stab hour afterall) and using makeshift barricades(I love the benches!) to topple waves of zombies.
Also.. Remember about double clicking chests! They're nifty.

Now.. I can only imagine how good this game could be in a co-op or a full multiplayer, saddly It has not.

Even though there aren't any officially ways of making saves, there's a workaround and I've been using it because I just don't have that much time to invest into a game and neither do I think it's fair to say that the alternative of always being on top of your game in *every encounter*(because I do like leaving no one "alive")/playing very overly cautious(i.e losing huge loads of time) is good for your health,You could probably run past them altogether... it could be the easiest way of dealing with a major part of this game. There's also the reason that I've picked up Derrin for this, even though I talked to him that we're going to avoid zombies was my original stance... I just don't seem to see it going very well if I have to care for another person like that therefore I'm playing like a xenophobe, and not to be mistaken, there are some checkpoints, I just like to have my own. I'm not going to say how to do it especially in a review, but see the steam forum and there might be some pointers

I've enjoyed this game

Pros:

>Methodical and simple curve.
>Fitting,atmospheric soundtrack.
>Your horse can eat the grass to resume it's stamina(thought it was just an animation at first, but thats cool)
>You can set your own pace as long as you don't plan on quickly ending the game.

Cons:

>It's rough around the edges, especially with the AI in later stages of the game.
>Small variety of mechanics.

But overall this game is worth the buck,I've enjoyed riding around on a horse micro-managing my peasants.
