READ THIS BEFORE BUYING so you don't have to buy the game twice like i did
It is a great game, but for the love of God, DO NOT buy the game on Steam. Let me explain.
I bought the game on steam because i like hvaing my games here and having my playtime keeped tracked of. It was 10 eur and it included the base game and Heavensward expansion. That means i got 30 days of playtime and removed the free trial's limitations. But at level 50 (iirc) you'll have to buy the next one, Stormblood. Now, on steam you have that packed with Shadowbringers for 35 eur.
But wait, you say, there are discounts online, right?
... right?
The thing is, you can play on multiple platforms, playstation, pc, mac, BUT steam and the Square Enix platform both share the same license slot, meaning that as soon as you buy anything, let's say the base game, from any of those two platforms, you are locked to that platform, pc-wise, and have to buy everything from there. Now that isn't a problem, i bet there are just as many sales on steam as there are over there. I mean, it's only logical.
... right?
No. You see, i have 50 hours on this game. Which is nothing compared to the thousands of other players, but it all comes down to how much free time you have, and for me, free time was a rather scarce resource. Upon getting to ~25 hours of playtime i saw that the base game along with ALL the released dlc's (including Shadowbringers) was 16 eur on their site, while costing 45 eur on steam. It was frustrating, but i was stubborn and kept playing, hoping for a steam sale. It was at the 50 hour mark that i gave up. I researched it a bit and sales on steam are unpredictable, few and far between. I actually did know that beforehand because people are warning you everywhere but i ignored them because i went full "this can't help me because i can't read"/"I wAnt GamE oN stEem".So i bit the bullet. I created a new account, bought the game again and started doing the level 1 quests again..
So.. i had to buy the game twice, which was an unpleasant, frustrating experience. Don't do what i did. The game is definitely worth 16 eur. And it sure would be worth paying the full 45 eur price, but it is the fact that you could be getting it at 1/3 of the steam price that makes it questionable and weird. Also, good luck navigating their site when you decide you want to buy it. It is going to take you a while, that place is a UX nightmare.
But wait, can't you just download the launcher from steam and use your square enix account? I mean surely, the launcher is the same everywhere and they just check your account's permissions from their database, right?
... RIGHT? NO? WHY?
The steam launcher is different from the normal launcher, you cannot use it with your normal account, and vice versa. This is just weird, it is counterintuitive and just feels stupid. Oh, oh, did i mention that you cannot refund it on steam? "This purchase contains consumable content that cannot be refunded."
Everything hurts.
...
...
ANYWAY!
About it being worth the price
I say definitely go for it if you're like me and you find a steam sale, but keep in mind that you'll be relying on these steam sales from now on. Otherwise, if you buy the game on the sq enix platform you'll probably save yourself some time, money and frustration. You have their discounts, the online cd-key stores, the physical copies, etc, the possibilities are many more.
Other than that, the game is amazing, you won't regret giving it a try, and you will probably have to experience it yourself because there are so many things you can do that the chances to find something to love are very high. There is your review, go now. Have fun ^~^
