+ this game has insane depth to it. this could be a minus for some people. there are a tonne of numbers to play around with and systems upon systems to optimise and tweak.
+ the combat is deep and tactical. i came here after playing ff tactics to get more trpg fix and wasn't disappointed. positioning, squad composition, and planning future turns will pay off.
+ stylish. again may be a minus for some people but the attack animations are just insane and the whole game has an over the top, maximalist aesthetic. no subtlety here whatsoever. the anime style is nice and some of the character designs are very good.

- some of the systems in this game feel unnecessary. the demon assembly for example, feels tacked on. i think disgaea 5 could have done with some streamlining. there's a massive, intimidating amount of stuff to learn, some of which i think could have been cut.
- the english voice acting, script, and story. not a fan of any of the above. do yourself a favour and swap the audio to japanese. the story is very meh, and the script is plain terrible.
- there's rampant re-use of character skins. the skins are gorgeous though and i do love them, however there's a hell of a lot of recycling here. oh look, it's the sword guys from level 3, but now they're purple because we're on level 6.

overall i'd recommend disgaea 5 if you like rpgs and tinkering with numbers, sliders, and horrifically complicated systems. and anime.
