I can't recommend the game as of today: 1/19/2023

The gameplay especially when you first into it can feel great, the guns sound great, the chainsword revs just right, and the gore splatters perfectly as you cleave through hordes of the unclean. The levels of the game are quite beautiful and really don't spare on detail despite the often dark setting.

Unfortunately there's only a handful of unique levels and all of the missions just involve entering from one point or another on the same zone with one of a handful of very similar objectives that boil down to: carry things to the objective while being swarmed, wave survival where you have to reset a hacking tool (this is like 3/5 of the mission types), and killing a boss.

This is coupled with a ♥♥♥♥ progression system that can be boiled down to praying to RNGesus you get a good gun to drop from the hourly shop, or the daily shop you have to do grindy contracts for (often 12 mission long with special conditions that can be 12+ hours) to get currency in. The crafting system promised on launch is NOT THERE, and the last community update was months ago, the progression you enjoyed in Vermintide II is just not there.

This grind is only to hide the lack of content not just in levels but also actual weapon variety: the majority of weapons you'll come across are slight reskins of the lasgun or autogun with different damage numbers. Like sure a few of them have a unique fire mode (which boils down to shoot slow and hard or fast and weak) but beyond that you've got a bolter, a flamer, a plasma gun, a chainsword one and two-handed, a bunch of varieties on swords which swing pretty similar, a knife, and the psykers' staves. The Ogryn has a handful of unique (but not all viable weapons) but that's about it. Of all these variants only a smaller group are actually viable on higher difficulties even if you want to make them work.

This is stacked on top of the fact the game only dropped with 4 CLASSES and only 4 character this time, Vermintide 2 gave us at least 10 on launch. These classes are not balanced in any manner or fashion, sure they shine in particular circumstances but there's one that really shines... the Veteran, your generic FPS class, and he kills your highest value targets, ranged enemy elites like snipers, machine gunners (Ogryn and human), in quick fashion, these are what decimate a squad because about any class can be decent in melee (he can with skill be about as good as a Zealot).

This pigeonholes Zealot and Psyker into about one build each to really max things out, Zealot with a knife build to stay alive indefinitely and Psyker a flame build so he can actually do any decent damage. Ogryn is pretty good as he is, might need a bit more punchy power or dakka somewhere.

The responses you'd get from company boil down to: "Oh next week, next month, next year" just to put out a damn update on the progress of an update for the game! They've handled PR miserably for a game they should have given another 6 months in the oven. This is a bad launch even by Fatshark standards.

This game could be so, so much more, but it isn't, not yet, if it changes I'll change my mind, and I really hope it does since it has amazing potential.

A shooter that never quite seems to get old, even the most braindead are capable of getting into it, and the most tryhardy never capable of reaching perfection.

I like this boy clearly.
