Give the Devil his Due

Blizzard moderators cannot delete negative Steam reviews, maybe. I love the og blizz Diablo franchise. But this franchise has been tarnished like Neyrelle. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ from within, this franchise holding a soulstone ie. the shop and all its glorious macrotransactions, they're not micro mind you. Psychologists and marketing doing their work so you will continue churning out your sweet, sweet gold to purchase every last fomo they can pull off.

And if you do not see that, if you continue to deny it, just look at your wallet, it's gasping for breath. Just imagine if you had a premium armor set that you can actually find IN the game and PLAY for it, not pay. Alas that is what Lilith has been warning us about, the greater evil that's behind all this. Shut your brain and play they say. Let that righteous hatred fester.

I will only recommend you get this if you have a strong willpower and have a strong foundation of not impulse buying. The art, music, vibes, and gameplay are top quality.

My metroidvania antennae is tingling but my gamer brain is not braining. Idk why the devs chose the Hyper Light Drifter vagueness for onboarding. It is NOT Hyper Light Drifter, it IS a metroidvania and it SHOULD FEEL like a metroidvania and not an HLD-like. I totally dig the aesthetic, narrative, but the introduction will halt any filthy casual, even if I'm a total sucker for metroidvanias. Skong, Gr2me, Kotama, Blasphemous 2, TheLastFaith, to name a few with very straight forward onboarding. It's like trying to swallow a whole takoyaki only for your tongue to be burnt; that feeling of trying to hit a piñata while blindfolded is the feeling I got. I will be patient, I know this is my cup of tea, but I will wait for it to cool first before taking a sip.

The sword master character I was waiting for. An unexpected but a very welcome collaboration. He-man and Skeletor, Xena the Warrior Princess, or Kratos, who's next? Wow we're actually getting a modern film of Masters of the Universe this 2026.

Rusting Sublime

Story

The story of Grime is too vague until you reach the true ending. With that in mind, Grime 2 is not as vague anymore and has a lot of NPCs you can interact with. I could smell the plot a mile away but it was a fun time getting there.

Traversal

I finished Kotama and Academy Citadel's Corridor of Time in the hardest difficulty where they remove the platform assist. I make it a point to clear Hollow Knight's infamous Path of Pain per playthrough. Don't get me started with Silksong's precision platforming. Combine the jank of Kotama and the fluidity of Skong and you have one of the most innovative movement techs in a metroidvania. A straight up upgrade from Grime 1, makes you wonder what else they're going to add in Gr3me. If you did not attempt or have not experienced any of the aforementioned platforming sequences then you will experience it in full blast in this game.

Combat

Grime 1 had a simpler, more methodical combat system. Grime 2 improved upon it and added more systems for a more robust selection for skill expression. I loved playing Prototype and really enjoyed the parkour in Forspoken (skip this AAA game) and you could consume enemies and use their abilities.

----
Random Parallel

What's funny is I'm finishing an anime called A Sign of Affection wherein the main character is quite deaf and uses sign language to convey her emotions. Hands and fingers form a very vital role in our day to day lives and we can't appreciate them enough. Give your hands some loving and maybe treat them to something nice. That anime and this game are worlds apart, their genres do not even match and they are polar opposites, but they do give importance to roughly the same thing, convey emotions. Maybe the universe is playing tricks on me again for the nth time.

----
Early Impressions

I usually write my reviews after I've completed an ending of the game, sometimes even going for the full 100% completion before doing so. This one is going to be an early review because the game is massive. Grime 2 is actually
Grime Squared
. If Grime 1 was already big, the sequel is way, way massive in scope.

Story
is not too vague but it still requires a lot of deep thinking. The
combat
is glorious and the
traversal
is more of Abandoned Opus. If you hate Grime 1's end game parkour and secret boss then you're in for a rough time. The
boss fights
are more complex, challenging, and sometimes teetering on unfair.

But damn the vibes is immaculate for a cosmic horror metroidvania. The music, the environment and the overall tone of its universe is so full of aesthetic. It's like Mona Lisa's missing eyebrows, curiosity is further amplified and personified in this art medium. Sometimes we game because we want to escape, resonate with, and be mindless, but at the same time be philosophical.

If you have a wild imagination and you want to scratch that gamer brain itch, then look no further. As a metroidvania afficionado this franchise is on par with Hollow Knight and Silksong, and is a sure recommendation for fans who want to experience something new but remain in a familiar setting. If Hollow Knight was the tutorial to Silksong meme, then Gr1me is to Gr2me.

Finally, I can smash some Royal Albert without spending a dime.

Spoiler Theory
There are many things at play here but if we were to watch the very first cinematic from Grime 1, the two entangled cosmic entities, one of them is seen as transferring breath to the other. Now, watch the final cutscene of Grime 2 and we see him being pushed away into what is seemingly the same scene we get in the true ending of Grime 1. That's why no matter what we pick as a choice, be it the good, neutral, or bad choice, we end up with the same conclusion. If you splice up the very ending cutscene of Grime 2, the spiral heart beating and the very intro cutscene of Grime 1, the spiral heart beating again, there is continuity. So if E33 introduced playable NPCs, in Grime we are playing an anti-hero as the main protagonist. Our role is to be the Endgiver, we are the King of Arms and the Eater of the Cosmic. What then will Grime 3 be about? The other 2 black holes, our other Kin? Or will The Otherwhere be explored further? Cosmic horror is open for interpretation. Thanks devs for this wonderful cosmic experience!

Tempedia 10/10

Clocking in at 69hrs for 100% completion. Everything you need to know is in the Tempedia. I've only ever used 1 reroll, 1 block, 1 snooze. Never had a problem getting what skills I needed and fully evolved them. Some tourist/bot players keep complaining about repetitiveness, difficulty and writes long reviews to fool potential fans into not entering and enjoying this colorful world. This is a roguelike, you die and repeat, you win some and wonder why you lose some. My tip for newer players is to read the Tempedia and click on the Stages tab, the recommended Temtem type is there vs the stage you're trying to finish. ALL vampire survivor likes are repetitive, this one is pokemon-like. GLHF!

I read reviews during my downtime and I've noticed a hate campaign on this game. So this is a review of those reviews. Skill issue. Game is great, been playing non-stop after 1.0. Co-op is also fine after the patch fix. Either these guys are playing where they are worlds apart, ie. they are playing with ISPs that don't match. If you check the graph it will tell you that these players just came back to hate on the game after 1.0 release. Hmm. Is it because Nintendo doesn't have anything like this on Switch? Just a shower thought. Game is fun if you like colorful stuff, if you don't then that's fine too. These bots and tourists don't like you to have fun huh. If you like Army of Ruin or Twilight Survivors this game is right up your alley.

I finished Forspoken before this game, watched the credits in full, guess who they thanked in their credits? Steam, Microsoft, Sony, Epic. They forgot someone. Yes, you, the player who purchased and played their game till the end. It's just heartwarming when you see in the credits, thank you. It aint much but it's honest work. - David Brandt [RIP]

Now all this game needs is 1 aesthetic temtem like Gardevoir or Angewomon. Ash Ketchum graduated on March 24, 2023, it's high time for other monster collection games to rise like Temtem or Palworld. Thank you devs for making a fun game! Muchas Gracias!

Review under construction after 1.0

Story: n/a
Art: 4/5
Music: 5/5
Fun: 4/5

There's a learning curve if you're going in solo on certain maps. Wish you could pet / feed the temtems but that would be a different game. If Twilight Survivors and Jotunnslayer had a child it's this game. You're not the trainer this time around, you're the pokemon / digimon the temtem, find your favorite and have a blast!

Early Access Review

Very polished survivors-like. Great music too. I've been playing solo so I can't speak for the co-op side. Bullet heaven or reverse bullet hells all have the same gameplay, if you're new to this genre, it's a great starting point. Simple yet engaging, not too easy, not too hard, just the right spot. I love the humanoid Temtems because Mew / Mewtwo, Lucario are my favorites alongside Angewomon. Innki with the claws that do mini judgment cuts, chef's kiss!

Remove the story, use the technical capabilities of the Luminous Engine and combine it with the story of [Final Fantasy Tactics Advance]. [Marche, Ritz, and Mewt] deserve a glow up. Remember that when you blur the lines of Good and Evil alongside Women good, Men bad way of thinking, you have the recipe for mediocrity. Play this game if you're a super fan of [Rings of Power] but if you're a true [Lord of the Rings] fan skip this fanfic. Lacks the charm of [Sam and Frodo], and focuses more on [Gollum's duality].

----
I get it now, why I like reading and making essay reviews. The story of this game was meant for the modern audience and the big screen. It is not a gamey game with a story but an interactive game that is driven by the story. That is why it feels so disjointed for me. One moment I'm having fun doing parkour stuff and mindlessly slaying fantasy beasts but I dread the moment the main character speaks up and the story begins. It tried to be good but that is not enough for a triple A title.

----
Unapologetic and ungrateful game. I always watch any game credits fully till the end and this is one of those games that do not thank the player even once for playing their game. That alone is a big thumbs down for me. 2 words, Thank You, and they couldn't even type that in. They made 2 different credit rolls, let that sink in. It tried so hard to be a likeable [Afro Samurai] tandem but hell naw.

----
Deeper into the game the title should have been [Sentenced to be a Hero]. And then you realize you're actually playing an all-rounder parkour mage, a mage like [Methode from Frieren]. What could've been if this was written better, the devs were cooking something with this one but alas it failed to hit that sweet spot.

----
Tanta of Swearing

Everyone was talking about how cringe or woke it was back in the day and it still is, kind of. So I am playing this game for a different reason; I just want to parkour and roleplay as an [Isekai'd] character. [Alice in Wonderland] can be called an [Isekai] in this day and age if we go down the rabbit hole. Or maybe [Dorothy from Wizard of Oz].

This game is a Human version of [Sanic the Hedgehog] with a sprinkle of [Infamous Second Son] and a pinch of [Prototype] in a bleak [Final Fantasy] elseworld. If you come in with the right expectations then this game will be a blast to play. Just like how [Crimson Desert] is not for everyone, Forspoken is likewise. There is a lot of jank in this triple A so definitely tweak your settings first to get the optimum fps.

I will only recommend you get this at a steep discount to alleviate the rough first few hours. If you have low tolerance for swearing then skip this game entirely. I play this at night before going to bed so I can get an REM Sleep. Forspoken is the embodiment of 6 7, a perfect sine wave hence the mixed reviews.

Review after 100%

Would recommend to metroidvania fans who like Nine Sol's combat. The more you unlock the more fluid it becomes which is what Metroid was all about. The Vania or Castlevania combat style is imbued with parry which makes it satisfying for parry enjoyers. Exploration and backtracking introduces a reverse type of fast travel which is confusing at first but will all make sense later on. The early parts might be tough but if you like difficult games then this one is worth spending some quality time. As you find more students, like in Blue Archive, this game has a whole cast of likeable characters. And a lot of nerd references ranging from other games, animes and movies. Time to enrol in Academy Citadel and become the Carmel Star!

Review while working towards 100% achievement

It got me thinking about Steins;Gate, Gun Gale Online, and even Psychopass. This game has gacha platforming sections that you wish you didn't have sweaty hands and an old controller with a stick shift problem and unresponsive bumper buttons. Combat is flashy and spicy like those gacha mobile games, looking at you Zenless Zone Zero and Punishing Gray Raven. This a game for an otaku or a nerd and it will scratch that itch if you're into difficult games like Sekiro or Silksong. I just wish the characters had voices or maybe an entire new language just to differentiate who's speaking on the screen. This is my Stellar Blade at home.

----
Initial impressions

If Grime is Biboo-coded, Kotama and Academy Citadel is Ina-coded.

Parrying is satisfying but you have to get used to the wind up.

Platforming sections are a mix breed but more often borderline atrocious. I try to clear them if I can but end up using the game's built-in platform assist. Did no one play test that [redacted] room? Even Path of Pain and Abandoned Opus are all doable because the controls were precise. In this game you have to press 3 buttons like you are comboing in a fighting game just so you can do 1 move.

Everything else is fine. Lore, Art, Music are great.

Have you watched Stargate? Are you a solo Arc Raider? Are you a dog person? Get spooked, get mesmerized in this bigger and badder sequel.
