So I've tried this game and here are my thoughts...

Lets start with the cons...
Cons:
-Laggy server you can't do anything about and they won't fix it.
-Rubber banding all over the place.
-Endless grind without any guarantee that you might even make progress.
-Limiting lunar souls to 18 per week??? Why? Let people farm them.
-You can farm hours and hours of gems without getting a single one you can actually use and re-rolling stats on them costs the lunar souls which are limited to 18 per week.
-Repetitive
-Pay walled items (You can buy credit pouches with in game currency)
-Nothing is really worth paying for when you consider the amount you're paying.
-Bad progression, it's not gradual but comes in bursts of "Oh I'm having trouble killing this" and then all of a sudden you're destroying it.
-Bad tutorials.
-Workbenches for days... Just combine some of them or allow people to combine them in a crafting recipe?

Pros:
-Lots of things to gather like mounts, allies, etc.
-Several classes even though some of them have essentially the same skills.
-You can buy credits with in game currency.

Alright lets be honest here...
The game has a great concept but the execution of it is less than stellar.

TLDR:
The game is a great concept with poor execution. A game full of bugs, shallow story, shallow missions, shallow mechanics etc. It feels like an empty husk that looks cool from the outside.
I had fun with it but only because I had friends on discord to hang with while we playing it in separate instances because Multiplayer is a mess. The money and ship grind is the main time sink.

I played this game quite a while after the initial release and I had fun and now with the VR release I played it again at first it was fun but after a while you realize that all planets look very similar if not the same.
Almost every single planet i went to had the oxygen plants that puff out toxic air and they had the cave rocks that also put out toxic air and not to mention the venus fly trap plant that hits you when you're not even close to it.
All planets have the same looking buildings with the same looking aliens in them that say the same thing over and over. It's like taking to a kid that can only say 3 sentences.
All trees look the same with different colors sometimes.
The animals have a little bit of variety but in the end you're see the same hopping pineapple on a ton of planets as well. The animals also don't pose a single threat or have any interesting interactions to them at all. They feel like empty husks. Even if the animals are hostile to you they just run up to you and you get hit. But it's not really a threat.
Environmental damage like weather and such also poses no threat at all. Once again more of an empty husk.

So what we've established is that everything is essentially a shallow empty husk when it comes down to it.

Lets talk about base building for a second!
The building in this game is not that great. There are instances where you'll think you should be able to place something down but it won't let you and that's just really frustrating. Like you can put railings in a certain spot next to stairs or you can't put stairs next to arches or you can't put a trading terminal on a wooden wall or the health and hazard modules you can put down don't work because it says you need power yet there is no way to hook them up to power.

Also when building in multiplayer the person who was at my base was not able to see the changes I was doing not to mention the lag you get when going to certain bases and I have a good rig to run games on.

I did try to build a couple bases and this is how it went:
I attempted to build a couple bases and my first base that I spent quite a while on was sunk into the ground when I came back one day totally ruining the build and I essentially had to delete it. Now I did not terraform anything to build this base so the bug (Is it a bug?) where the ground regrows in your base wasn't a thing here. It literally just moved underground and the top part was sticking out.

The second base I attempted to make also took me quite a while and I came back one day and it was tilted. It wasn't when I built it though. So that one got deleted.

The third base which I spent the most time on was amazing. But once again suddenly when I got back a terrain feature from that planet spawned in it and it wasn't there before. Not to mention the people I was playing with didn't even see it. It was only on my end. But that also ruined my base.

After those 3 instances I honestly stopped trying... Imagine spending hours on a base just to have it ruined by bugs over and over again and you can't do anything about it.

Lets talk about multiplayer now...
Trying to join someone in multiplayer is an actual nightmare... I would join someone and they wouldn't be able to see me. Ships that land at trading posts and space stations would have different stats for both of us. Sometimes ships would land in each other.
Nexus group quests would be fun to do even though they're super easy and having a group for it isn't even needed at all but once you go back to try and turn it in you might get put in a different nexus instance essentially making it so you can't see each other anymore even if you go back to the same system and you'd have to go through the nightmare of rejoining again.

Long story short is that my friends and I essentially had to play solo and just talk in discord for the most part instead of actually playing together because of the huge amount of bugs associated with it not to mention the lag when going to each others bases.

Once again Multiplayer is a empty husk of nothingness.

How about ships, frigates and freighters?
Ships and freighters is going to be your main time sink in this game. Finding a ship or freighter you like and then getting it in the highest class you can might take you 10 minutes or days.
Making money for those ships might also take you quite a while unless you decide to use cheats, exploits or broken mechanics which a lot of people do.

As for frigates which are the small ships that come with freighters. You can send them on quests and get rewards for it. It's essentially a shallow mechanic.
Not to mention the fact that once frigates get damaged in a mission and they get back you might not be able to fix them so then you just have to delete them from your fleet so if you spent the time to find S class frigates you can say bye bye to your time spent and the money you spent hiring the frigate.

What happened to me is that my frigates got back and I had to repair them. In order to do that you need to land on the frigate however the landing pads were broken meaning you couldn't land on them and therefor you couldn't repair them.

You also can't change colors on ships which lets be honest here should be a thing in a game like this specially after all this development time. Even a simple mechanic where you can re-roll a ships paint job through their random generation system for a fee at a space station or something would be good enough.

How about mission? How about the story?
Missions are the same shallow missions over and over again that are super easy and honestly not worth doing.

The story is uninteresting and shallow. They just have you jumping all over the place to add game time and say it's content but in reality it's just padding in my opinion. In fact you might go through the entire story only to have your decision at the end bug out your entire game.

How about flying and how about VR?
Flying around is pretty good once you get used to it and in VR it feels really nice to fly around.
I haven't had any motion sickness at all which is a very good thing. I have to give them credit for that one.
The game however is very poorly optimized and not just for VR and still carries a lot of simple VR bugs with it at the writing of this review.

That being said the ship combat is once again not that great. it's the same thing over and over. Oh pirates want your stuff... Oh you won't give it to them? Lets have you spend some time killing these ships that don't pose a single threat what so ever and have nothing good for loot. They're just an annoyance.
I must say that ship combat in VR is a lot more interesting but in the end it boils down to the same thing.

That's pretty much it.
There are better games to spend your money on that aren't as shallow as this game is.

Alright let me be honest here... I gave this game a chance so lets go over the pros and cons.
First of all I play this on survival mode so this isn't one of those casual I'm just going to go run around and shoot things kind of gameplay instead you will have gameplay where settlements actually matter to a certain degree and it's gameplay where you'll die really quickly.
Also I use an HTC Vive.
GTX 1080TI
Intel Core i7 4770K
16GB Ram

Lets go over the pros and the cons but lets start with the cons first because there are too many to even mention.

Cons:
-The price of the game is essentially 60 euros, the price of a full priced game. Now since I already owned the non VR version of Fallout 4 this is absolutely atrocious and it feels like Bethesda is just seeing gamers as a sponge of money trying to squeeze out as much as possible. It doesn't even include the DLC's. They could have just had a 10$ upgrade for people that already owned the game.
-As soon as you get into the game and you start shooting some stuff you'll soon realize that the guns have something called bloom. Now if you don't know what this is it's essentially some randomization to the area where the gun would hit.
In VR this doesn't make sense at all and it makes you feel like the developers didn't even try their own game to get the feel right. If you aim at something straight on it should hit that something. There is a mod that fixes the Bloom however fixing the game shouldn't be the job of the modding community.
-VATS also is questionable... VATS may show that I am aiming at something but then you shoot and it doesn't hit the target. This is very frustrating and infuriating specially since when you aim at something in VATS it really blocks you from aiming properly with the sights.

Just in these last 2 cons you have both aiming methods which means that you can't really say "I'll just use VATS instead" or "I'll just aim manually instead".

So on to the next cons...

-Initially navigating the pipboy is a little frustrating but as soon as you get used to it it become a lot better and actually makes sense however when scrolling trough a list of items, lets say your aid tab full of food, water, meds and chems and you get halfway down the list and accidentally go to another tab because the dead zone on the vive controller is too small and you go back to the list you have to start from the top again. This makes no sense and it's very frustrating at times. It once again makes it feel like the developers didn't even try their own game.
-Lets talk about building settlements... In VR you'll have the jitter of your hands so trying to put a foundation down in a specific spot is frustrating. Not only that I personally think that building in this game is only bearable with the place in red mod and the scrap everything mod which should honestly be in the game by default. That being said the place in red mod doesn't work in VR despite there being a VR version it's not updated and just crashes your game.
The junk fences for example are supposed to be used together but when placing them there are giant gaps in between them and you can't really get them to snap at all which was possible in the normal version even though it still wasn't great there.
That brings us to snapping, snapping stuff together is so frustrating because it doesn't make sense. I often have to aim at some weird place to even get it to snap to the right spot or I have to remove certain pieces in order to get others in place.
Once again it makes it feel like the devs didn't even try their own game.
-Lets say you fix the bloom of the weapons and the iron sights work as intended as soon as you put a different sight on there like a reflex sight you'll realize that those are not accurate. Now there are mods to fix those however either they don't work or I installed it wrong.
-Often times it will use a stimpack from the quick select window when trying to turn.
-Scoping with weapons sometimes makes it hard to see stuff far away.
-The visuals are less than stellar. If you've ever looked at an old tube tv while it's on that's how it's going to look like in your headset.
-The text in the game is sometimes hard to read.
-Companions are still utter trash and just get in your way and get you detected. Then they go down and ask for your precious stimpacks to save them.
-Sometimes you'll want to aim trough a fence or something like that however you'll soon find out that you can't do that as it's a solid wall despite being able to see trough it which ruins your immersion in VR.

Now lets go over the pros of this game.
-As long as you're using the mod to fix the bloom issues in this game shooting is actually a lot of fun and very satisfying and scoped guns work great. Reflex sights are still garbage and unusable though and so is VATS unless an enemy is in your face.
-The locomotion has the option to teleport as well as direct movement and the game does come with several other VR specific options to make certain things more bearable. People say you get motion sickness however everybody will probably get it to a certain degree at first but the more you use direct movement the more you get used to it.
-You have a big world to explore and lots of quests to do.
-Very immersive.
-If it didn't have the issues it has it would be a lot of fun.
-It runs very well for me, I haven't had a single performance issue.

Now in the end this clearly is a cash grab. The game has unacceptable issues that are not and never will be fixed and it really just makes you wonder if the developers are really in it to make great games or if they're in it to just squeeze out as much money as they can.
A wise man once said "Make great games and people will buy them." I think Bethesda should go back and really read that sentence and even start using it as their motto. Just look at the recent release of Red Dead Redemption 2.
Anybody that says that this game is exceptional and doesn't have a single issue is just lying to you and they shouldn't be allowed to write reviews.

The concept is great but this game would not be what it is without the modding community.
It is a must to have at the very least the custom songs mod installed otherwise it will get old soon.

Without the custom songs mod it is lacking in content.

The game takes an easy to learn and hard to master approach.
The scoring system isn't just hitting the blocks, it also matters how you hit them, where you slice them, how far you go after you hit the block so there is a high skill ceiling.

I recommend this game as long as you can see past it's many issues that it has which really is difficult.

Issues:
-Traps don't work when you're not right next to them. So as soon as it's no longer on your screen your rabbit trap or cannibal trap will no longer get anything caught in them.
-Animals quite literally spawn right next to you and often times you go trough an area and see nothing and then suddenly there is an alligator right behind you or even worse... right under you.
-The building is very frustrating and very clunky at times.
-Rain comes trough the custom roof if you don't have a square or rectangular building.
-If a fire dies while there is a pot on it it literally duplicates the pot and removes whatever was in the pot.
-If you fall into the sink hole and survive without already having a re-breather it's impossible to get out unless you're a parkour god or teleport out using cheats.
-Bodies sometimes just disappear.
-If you're burning a body and walk away for a little bit the bones won't drop which probably has the same reason for occurring as the first issue.
-Cannibals can sometimes just run on top of a trap very weirdly.
-If you kill a mutant with a trap it glitches out and either gets flung into the sky or just keeps spazzing out until it gets flung somewhere else.
-You can't destroy pictures or picture frames or trophys etc.
-The floor in one of my houses is uneven for some reason and it makes you jump up.
-People say that the cannibals are intelligent but in reality they're not. They can be a threat but intelligent they are not.
-Incendiary arrows don't always light up what you're shooting.
-It's impossible to hit anything with a thrown spear.
-You can't throw the spear downwards.
-etc etc

Anyway... In short... This game does not feel like a full release and it has issues that should have been resolved ages ago.
However despite these issues I still had a lot of fun playing this game with friends.
Also who cares about the kid? Nobody. What was his name again?
