It also evolved from political correctness. It was probably a couple of decades ago that the use of the term 'guys' for women came into common usage. Women didn't want to be referred to as 'girls', unless it was by another woman because it was considered demeaning. So the use of 'guys' arose. It is surprising that the term has been accepted as gender neutral, because for a long time the masculine pronoun 'he' and the noun ending 'man' was considered gender neutral. These terms, however, came under serious attack during the feminist revolution and has resulted in a plethora of new nouns that replace the 'man' ending with 'woman'.
