One of the most unique and fun games of the generation from a studio with so much talent.

Won so many accolades and was loved by everyone.

Still not enough for Xbox higher ups, despite it being the exact type of game they wanted.

I cant describe how funny it is to me that they got J.K. Simmons, an all star actor, back as Cave Johnson for a literal 30 minute Steam Deck demo

Far Cry 3 is a game that is very interesting to many people. It's not the greatest game ever in my opinion, there are actually an insane amount of missed opportunities with this game, and the second half is kind of a slog and a bit of a downgrade. But that is really only because the best thing about this game is gone in the second half: Vaas Montenegro. Vaas is one of the single best video game villains there is, and a perfect villain for this game. With an amazing performance by Michael Mando and a surprising amount of depth, Vaas is best thing this game has to offer. That's not to say that the rest of the game has great elements to it. Jason Brody, the protagonist, is possibly the most dynamic playable-protagonist I've ever seen, he goes through so much change throughout the main story line and you believe it and understand it, because you've been in control of it the entire time and it fits the players actions in both story and side content together very well. If you enjoy killing people in this video game (which isn't hard), congratulations, you are now Jason Brody, a regular man being turned insane by an island that encourages bloodlust everywhere you go. Many of the side characters in the story are also great, as most of them show the player how a more secure person deals with the island like your girlfriend Liza and Willis Huntley, and most of it is by going into isolation to get away from the bloodlust. They also show the player how the island can corrupt anyone in many different ways that make a lot of sense with people like Dennis Rogers and Sam Becker, and how the island is also a place where people who were already bad to take advantage of others, with characters like Buck Hughes and Hoyt Volker being the biggest examples. Overall the characters in this game are great and all have traits that play into the protagonist and his story line very well. The overall story is great and makes a lot of sense, with Jason Brody going through one of the most creative situations a video game has ever put a player in: a place where we doubt the character we play as. This isn't a totally new concept, this has been explored in games like The Last of Us 1 and 2 and others, but this game has a very unique take on it and feels fresh even to this day. The open world side of it is still very enjoyable, and while the gameplay can play into the story very well, can leave more to be desired. And lastly, the soundtrack to this game is pretty great, with the main theme being a huge standout even though it's been meme'd quite a bit. The main theme not only fits the tone of this game expertly, but also creates the tone by itself just by listening to it, which is mainly why its so memorable.

Now with all that being said, this game has quite a few problems as well. Vaas, the single best thing about this game, is not in the second half, when the island already felt barren enough then the level design on the second part gets more open and empty. A few of the story missions aren't the best, there's literally one where you just burn a bunch of weed with a flamethrower while dubstep plays (it's not the worst thing ever, just extremely 2012), and most of the side quests are just go there grab something and bring it back type of missions. Most of the second half is kind of a slog unless its a mission with Sam, who is probably the most fun character who is introduced in the later half, though the story really starts to pick up by the end, with an ending choice that is basically either good ending or bad ending. Both endings are good and make sense in the universe, and neither are super disappointing like both endings of Far Cry 5. I'm not totally ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on Far Cry 5, I think the game was pretty damn fun, but come on man those endings were so pointless and bad.

Overall the game is like a 8/10 for me, but that doesnt really highlight that when this game hits, it hits out of the park. But this game also has a lot of things that could have been expanded upon, which is why many people consider 4 and 5 to be big disappointments, because they just copy-pasted the same formula from 3 into those games without really improving anything except making it feel more modern. I would definitely recommend this game just for Vaas' performance alone, but most of the rest of the game is still pretty great. So yeah play it if you like open world Ubisoft games from before they started milking franchises without making anything super new.

For a MUCH deeper breakdown of the game, go watch Pyrocynical's amazing video called "Fat Cry 3" on this game when you are finished.
