I guess for the price tag the game is bretty good, and a surprise for a movie based game. Because normally IP based games are outright garbage and devoid of creativeness. This one isn't, and has a unique roguelike gameplay but instead of some random RPG character, you roguelike with an army. You manage their equipment, supplies, manpower, weapons, vehicles, so on and so forth. No base building so to speak, but it is unique and I can appreciate that they tried with something instead of lazily going along with what's already out in the market. And if you support such endeavors in the gaming industry and also are a fan of managing things while also controlling a post apocalyptic free company, this game might be for you.

Combat, I feel that the game plays alot like "casual" but "stealthy" Men of War 2. It's pretty reasonably realistic, with line of sight, ammo limitations, squad members dying permanently, vehicle module damage, cover, etc. Enemy attacks are quite lethal if you play on higher difficulties - one shotting your assets quite often - as the lore should be! So if you are into that, I can say this game might be for you.

My 3 complaints:
1. Deal with this now! type of cutscenes
There are lots of moments that just forces you to savescum. They will throw things at you and expect you to be able to handle it without any sign or warning. You'd expect some kind of recon units, preparation timer, or mission briefing can prevent this, but there are insufficient. Also, i'm talking about forced scripted cutscene and spawns that you have no prior knowledge of. You are then railroaded into taking a generalist approach because you don't know what you are going up against anyway - then where goes the fun of building your own army?

2. Too cartoonish for the setting (for my taste anyway)
Sometimes, the game feels cartoonish and childish. "Oh no we have to save the people" type of childish. Marble cape hero garbage type childish. The kind of disappointment you feel when you play Starcraft 2 when you are a fan of Starcraft 1.
Granted, the original series was children oriented. You have a child main character and this badass robot protects the boy. But I expected something more gruesome and gritty in a post judgment day warfare, and the original movie came out decades ago. I doubt children are into this series, so yeah. Maybe I am not the target audience, but I guess it's a matter of preference.

3. Bugs and bad QoL
This game has some bad issues outside of its design philosophies. Infantry pathfinding is not too good. One of the squad members will get stuck inside a building or a vehicle wreckage for example.
There are no tools to check line of sight, and camera view is quite limited - to top down view, when determining LoS is critical if you are getting one shotted by the robots, vice versa.
And not sure why I can't merge squads, or create/train new ones. You can disband a bunch of "Militia" to acquire "manpower" to replenish "Rangers (former US Army type)" but can't train new rangers neither can you train new militia. You either get t hem from missions or hire them as mercs. Weird but the game is like this. Weird solution for removing base building aspect.

-------------------------Devs abandoned the game btw------------------------

God ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ damn it. This game is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, I want a refund but I can't because I played for 3 hours.

I would refuse to play this piece of ♥♥♥♥ even if it were F2P.

Played this game and not sure why I would want this game in any way.

Honestly, the mechs are fugly as hell. They are cartoonish and fat. There are better steampunk designs out there, and this one is not one lol. But what this makes this game so sad is that the game feels like a lazy "foundation" of sort so these abominations can be justified to exist.

Gameplay and genre wise, this game brings quite literally nothing new to the scene, it's the epitome of creative bankruptcy. Frankly, this game plays like a cheap illegal knockoff of Company of Heroes but worse because you get: smaller battle sizes,
less voice/audio feedback for unit status (for example, unit won't yell at you to tell that they are being suppressed but I am surprised that they even bothered to copy the suppression system straight from CoH)
less UI feedback for various situations (for example suppressed units have no indication other than their unit models laying low on the ground to take cover. There is no news feed, no UI change)
unit control issues (units don't lose pathfinding when enemies disappear into fog of war. so when enemies retreat - also a feature stolen from CoH - they will chase the enemy down all the way into the enemy base then die.)
pathfinding issues (units get stuck with each other quite often)
less unit variety (developers thought having "[faction infantry]" and "[faction infantry] but with grenades" as separate units would alleviate this issue. lol, lmao even)
no offmap abilities
no unit upgrades

Graphics aren't even that great for a 2020 game. I'd say it's on par with CoH. You can even see the polygons on the trees and blurring textures on their beloved mechs.

People praise the campaign alot but it's just cutscene fest and feels more like a movie.

The world map mode is pretty much cancer because your ability to defend your own territories is entirely RNG based.

Multiplayer is dead too so tough luck if you are into that.

The only two redeeming features of this game are that
1. It costs as much as garbage as it should when it's on sale

2. It has fugly mechs if that's your fetish

Where to begin. This game has fundamentally wrong gameplay design decisions, that this game feels like a painful chore rather than a game. Granted, it has interesting game concept and topic where you united and lead humanity against an unwinnable alien foe while competing other human factions for space resources. but this is all ruined due to how incompetent and stubborn the devs are.

1. chore
This game has little respect for your time.
For starter, this game is a chore. Imagine this. The game is run in real time, like every second out of a few decades if you are doing the "long" campaign. And even with end game techs, it takes weeks if not months to travel between planets. And your alien enemy is sitting at like outermost corner of the solar system - so it takes months minimum to just "move" there. But you will need to refuel your ships inbetween, and that requires space stations which also takes months to build. And If you leave said stations undefended, aliens will come to destroy your assets so you need additional defense fleets - which also take roughly a few months to build, and a few months to get to your stations. So far, it seems pretty normal right? But there is this weird arbitrary "turn" system called "mission phases". They game is forced to stop and ask you to give your agents missions. Missions can vary, like boosting popularity, sabotage, assassination, etc. But here's the catch, you have to not only manually set these missions every few weeks, but you can't even really automate them because the AI is next to useless, and imagine being stopped to babysit 6 councilors every few weeks when you have fleets moving around the solar system transit of which take a few months, and construction of which also take a few months. Devs think this is articulate and fun.

2. redundancy
This game has so many useless things that as you learn more about the game, you learn to ignore the garbage and trash to rush the "good" things.
for example, so this game has 94 drives - drives move your ships. so technically, they have 94 things that does the same thing. okay, but they represent tech progressions, and different strategies right? like some drives may offer better fuel but is slow, etc. yeah in a sense, but the problem is that you don't really need 94 drives to represent this, and the only reason the devs did this was simply because some research papers about said drives exist in real life, gameplay was more of an afterthought, if there ever was one lol. And this kind of approach is present throughout the whole game design that, it is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful and it shows. the aforementioned "mission phase" - which acts like a "turn" of sort when everything else quite literally everything else moves and is calculated in real time. Or how there are technologies which give you GDP bonuses but cost like 50k RP so nobody really do it because national GDP is worthless for some reason. or how technologies don't yield results immediately, you must research a separate faction project to acquire the fruits of your research and said projects appear RANDOMLY lmaooooooo - yeah remember what I said about rushing the good ones and ignoring the trash? You can get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ over via having a project never appearing and devs think this "encourages" replayability.

3. political messages ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ over gameplay
Imagine this: Some Somalian pirates sneak into the USA, disguised, and run public campaign unchecked for maybe 6 months. Now the half of USA supports the Somalian pirates, and will gladly fund their efforts. What is the American security apparatus doing? They can't do anything because the public love the pirates so much, any hostility will turn the public against them even more, so your only option is to run counter public campaign against them. This is what the developers think where the REAL fun and realism lie at.

Devs think faction is an idea. So devs think factions cannot be destroyed.
Remember what I said about how your game is forced to stop every few weeks out of a few decades because you have to give orders to your 6 agents manually? AI must do this too, and there are 7 other competing factions so that is 42 hostile agents max.
AI is so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and incompetent that it is generally accepted among the playerbase that AI is only an annoyance during extremely early phases and quickly become irrelevant.
But did you know that no many how much they lose support from the population, no matter how much you destroy their space assets, no matter how many times you assassinate their agents over and over, faction can't be destroyed because "it's an idea".
now imagine these 42 agents running around the Earth hurting your Earth assets - like reducing your faction's popularity every few weeks, or causing political unrest, and you have 6 agents to un - f-u-c-k this garbage, and you have to manually determine where to do this because the AI is random.
All because you can't destroy factions. That's right. That one faction reduced down to Somalia? They can come over to your EU or China or America, then preach how much they LOVE or HATE aliens, then there is nothing really you can do about it lmao.

Early Access Review
AI cheats so hard. I had my AT unit camoflaged, but the enemy walker would simply "avoid" the range by 1 tile even though they are supposed to have no knowledge of the units neither their equipment.

In a defensive mission where I had to prevent the enemies from crossing a certain area, I realized that my positioning doesn't matter, because the enemies will precisely rush where I am not, forcing me to not only relocate, but reveal my ambush.

Kinda cringe for a game that pretend to be a "tactical" game but oh well.

Otherwise, it is a very well made game that captures the overall military realism-ish tactical turn based battles. Walkers, tanks, drones, missiles, rocket barrage, mortars, grenades, snipers. Yeah.

Forced 5v5 ranked game where cheats and pre teams dominate the leader boards?
No REPLAY feature in a PvP rank focused game?
But no SAVE and LOAD feature in single player games where a single "mission" could take you over an hour?
Forced 5v5 with no leaver's penalty which punishes who stays and plays to the end?
Moderators that MANUALLY bans single player trainer cheat engine users but never bans the cheaters with 90% win rates?
Single player features which REQUIRE internet connection?
Broken, never play tested campaign and skirmish AIs?
Obnoxious playerbase which leaves right after their attempt to nuke fails?
A game that has terrible tutorial, then developers get upset and make a comment about hackusations because clueless users keep reporting opponents without understanding anything?

Hell yeah it's Wargame Red Dragon but ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ worse!
