We've experienced problems with the Voice Chat in the lobby of Left 4 Dead 2. Sometimes we can hear you, sometimes you can hear us, sometimes no one can hear anything. It's completely intermittent with no simple solution. However, when we start playing a game, all the Voice Chat functions work perfectly. When everyone returns to the lobby they seem to continue working.

For whatever reason it would appear that joining the lobby doesn't initiate voice settings properly but once a game is played everything is fine. It's also worth mentioning that even if the voice chat is working properly in the lobby, push-to-talk doesn't. you're just on! Clearly the voice functions in the lobby are separate from the game so don't expect your in-game settings to reflect in the lobby.
