Yaroslavl is one of the most ancient Russian cities and the oldest existing settlement on the Volga. It was founded in 1100 by Prince Yaroslav the Wise. Yaroslavl is called one of the contenders for the title of "capital" of the Russian cities of the "Golden Ring".Yaroslavl was the temporary capital of Russia, the seat of the Council of the whole land during the period of the Polish occupation of Moscow. The historical center of Yaroslavl is a part of the city of Yaroslavl, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List as “an outstanding example of the urban planning reform of Catherine II, launched throughout Russia in 1763.”
