The Resonance Cascade Scenario at the Black Mesa Research Facility heralded a dark age for humanity. The portal storms that occured as a result of it opened a gateway into the border world. The Xen portals that open from the temporal rift caused countless millions of Xen creatures to pour out onto Earth. The countryside was quickly overrun and people flocked to the cities for refuge.
