Hey everyone, how’s it going? Lately, I’ve been focusing on retro games from my generation (the 90s) and noticed that many classics, like boomer shooters, platformers, and adventure games, have been removed from Steam over time. Recently, I learned that Sega will be removing around 50 Mega Drive classics and a few Dreamcast titles from the store on December 6, as per their official site:

Sega didn’t explain why, but at least they gave a heads-up. As a collector, I thought some of you might also be interested, so I suggest grabbing titles like the Mega Drive/Genesis Classics or Dreamcast Cassics while they're still available.

Since many older games are removed from Steam—not just due to poor optimization by third parties but also partly because of Steam itself—I strongly recommend buying the games you love (and still working good) most during sales, especially older titles or those with low financial returns for developers and publishers. I also found out that GOG is running a game preservation campaign featuring 100 classic titles: https://www.gog.com/en/gog-preservation-program. GOG’s goal is to improve compatibility issues, especially for old DOS games, while fixing bugs and offering a DRM-free platform that doesn’t require any services or logins to play.

My point here is to encourage you to take care of your collection if you’re passionate about Steam and want to preserve your favorite games on the platform (or even on consoles and other current platforms). For those of us who care about preservation beyond Steam, remember that we have a certain responsibility to help preserve gaming history. If you have kids or plan to, this is a great way to share a beautiful, rich legacy with them. Whether it’s physical consoles or digital games, building a collection in the world’s biggest entertainment industry is something worth preserving.
