The Republic of Novgorod was a large medieval Russian state which stretched from the Baltic Sea to the Ural Mountains between the 12th and 15th centuries, centred on the city of Novgorod

Originally Novgorod was the capital of the Rus until 882 when Oleg transferred the capital to Kiev. Since that time and up until 1019-1020 Novgorod was a part of Kievan Rus. Novgorod Princes were appointed by the Grand Prince of Kiev.

The Republic was formed in 1136 and acted as the major economic power of Russia. It was invaded by both the Teutonic Order and The Mongolians and finally collapsed around 1478.
