Quoting the article:

"whereas Microsoft has made it clear that — at the moment, at least — DirectX 11.1 will be exclusive to Windows 8 without any plans to bring it to older operating systems."

So in order to play newer games, we would be forced to upgrade to Windows 8.

"Of course, if Microsoft really is using DirectX 11.1 to artificially force its user base to switch to Windows 8, it can only do so much. A large part of the power lies with the developers — if they don’t actually use any of the new DX11.1 features in their software, then there’s little reason to actually need those features."

The title pretty much sums it up. This is a little bit of good news.

In the meantime, windows 8 still has a chance at slamming down indie gamers and independent sofware developers in general. It still has the Metro app system which allows Microsoft to regulate all software in Windows 8.

This is not a general anti-Windows group, this is a group for bringing awareness of the possibility of a severe software lockdown. The Metro Apps are a 'slippery slope' to software oligarchy. If you don't believe Microsoft would do this, find out the circumstances of how Internet Explorer was created (the reason you don't hear about Netscape anymore).
