The wealthiest house in all of westeros, sitting apon the Iron Throne, owns the 2nd largest castle (Casterly Rock) and is plain out awesome.
House Motto- Hear Me Roar, for their sigil is a golden lion on a bloody field. This lion is golden due to the amount of gold the Lannisters own in their vault at Casterly Rock.

Lore Behind Casterly Rock.

A lion was killing people in the port town of Lannisport, so a man of house Casterly hunted the beast. He caught up with the lion apon a mountain, where he avenged the citizens of Lannisport. But, he left the cubs alive. The gods, because of this act of kindness, granted him to see a grand gold vein inside the mountain at which he stood. He orded men to mine this gold, and with the amount of gold he gained, he was very rich. He built a castle on the rock, so large. Almost as big as Harrenhal was, after the dragons burned it.
Later, though, Lann the Clever, founder of House Lannister, was able to trick House Casterly out of the castle, and took it for himself. Thus, House Lannister was born, and they became the richest house in Westeros.
Some Believe that the castle was built to look like a lion sitting apon the mountain at sunset.

A Lannister Always Pays His Debts

- A very common saying by the Lannisters, especially Tyrion Lannister The Imp. Although, it is not the house motto. It is used to make the house seem very trustworthy, for ,at one point, it was. It also goes to show how rich this house is, for they can pay off anything they do, and they will.

The Rains of Castamere

Some people refer to it as "The Lannister Song" or "The Lannister's Song".
The song is about Tywin Lannister and how he crumbled a house that betrayed house lannister, and took the castle of Castamere by force, and killed all who were in it.
