I'd like to formally endorse a certain game for use by the group:
The game is Fistful of Frags, a f2p online multiplayer shooter set in the old west. If you've played any classic multiplayer shooters, you'll recognize the feel of the game; multi-level maps, weapon pickup areas, sniping positions, etc. Even more than that, the weapons themselves feel extremely powerful; each shot feels like it actually has an impact. Finally, two out-of-game elements ultimately make this game shine; the f2p aspect and the creator's support. This game is /completely/ free to play. There are absolutely no micro-transactions. There isn't even a way to spend real money in-game. It's completely free, completely opened, and completely self-contained. In addition, the creator has made multiple updates per month since its launch back in May. One final note for the purposes of the group; it's probably one of the easier games out there to make a server for.
