California’s "Protect Our Games Act" has cleared a major hurdle. On May 14, 2026, the Assembly Appropriations Committee voted 11-2 to advance the bill, sending a clear message to the industry: the era of "disappearing" paid games might be coming to an end.

AB 1921 (Protect Our Games Act) aims to stop publishers from leaving customers with a "dead icon" in their library when servers go dark. If a game you paid for is being shut down, the operator would be required to:

• Give 60 days' notice before termination.
  
• Provide a remedy: an offline patch, an alternate version, or a refund.
  
• Clear up the "Buy vs. License" confusion.
