Ancient Mesopotamians occupied a vast land situated between the Tigris-Euphrates river system, where the geographical features of the region influenced and structured many aspects of their lives. In particular, the Tigris-Euphrates river system’s freshwater supply was heavily utilised by the ancient Mesopotamians through irrigation systems to cultivate crops and as a drinking water supply. However, flood protection and water management were vital for the survival of their civilisations because the rivers were a flood risk that posed a threat to the Mesopotamians, their infrastructure and their agricultural needs. Additionally, the lack of raw materials such as “metals, good timber, stone and other exotic items” in the region of southern Mesopotamia forced the ancient Mesopotamians to trade and search elsewhere, such as in northern Mesopotamia, the Persian Gulf, and the Indus Valley for such resources. Consequently, the lack of raw materials was improvised with the utilisation of mud-bricks, which shaped the infrastructural techniques and architecture of the ancient Mesopotamian people.
