THE ERA OF DARKNESS

Year: 850 3 irl days = 1 year

It is 843 the year of our lord. The Roman Empire fell 400 years ago, sending Europe into complete darkness. Technology began to disappear from society. Our sophisticated ways were dying; literacy rates dropped. A large united people is no more. Books can only be read by members of the church. The absense of Romans in the West has left a great void.

In the year 843, the Carolingian empire took a big hit. King Lothar, grandson of Charlemagne, took over the Empire when his father died. Soon after, his brothers envied Lothar. They did not see him as their king and ruler. Soon, the brothers revolted and caused a 3 year war. Eventually, the brothers became successful and met Lothar in Verdun. The Treaty of Verdun was created, Lothar was to keep the Kingdom of Middle Francia, Burgundy, and Italy. His nephew (son of Charles the Bald) was to receive the Kingdom of Aquitaine. Charles the Bald was to become the King of West Francia. Louis the German was to receive the Kingdom of Bavaria and the Kingdom of East Francia. So who will become the one to reforge the Carolingian Empire? Will Lothar achieve revenge, or will the empire stay split forever?

In the northwest is the British Isles stand divided. Ireland is split amongst its many counts. Wales is split between 4 dukes looking for complete control. England is split between 3 Kings. The Kingdom of Mercia, Wessex, and Northumberland. Who will be the mighty master to tame these isles?

A dark shadow has started to encroach upon Western Europe. People from the Scandinavian tribes have come, they bring axes and fire. Everywhere they go is ruin and destruction.

The mighty Abbasid Caliphate has begun to fracture. Many states are slowly gaining independence from the empire creating new large nations. Duchy after duchy leave and form their own power in the region. Will the Abbasids be able to reforge their great empire, or go down in history? In the west is the Umayyad Empire, many of their lands are still not converted from Catholic to Islam creating religious turmoil throughout the lands. Their expansion stopped by a unified Catholic front. How will they go on? From the streets also rises a new force. Shia is starting to gain fame and fortune. Will these cause new problems for the Islamic giants?

The Slavic States of the east are slowly converting to Catholicism and Orthodoxy in fear of being conquered from the greater powers. They do have strength but requires time. Can someone bring them together and beat back these foreign powers?

A great turmoil is unfolds in India. All nations strive to be the Tamer of India. Many great power states clash hoping for Indian dominance. The Islamic states are slowly pushing into India looking for riches and conquest. In the east is the buddhist nations look for their own seat of power in the region.

Many options to choose from. All of the world. Who will you be? This is the Era of Darkness!
