Suffering elevates the wise man, but crushes the fool. The one who humiliates himself secretly longs to be exalted. Others are wrecked in life — their hearts are corroded by the worm of doubt. May they use their strength to complete their journey with dignity. For some, loneliness is a refuge from their own infirmity, for others it is a protection from other people's plagues.

One strives to impress with intelligence, the other with passions, the third with connections, the fourth with detachment. They are all mistaken, because the viewer, watching the spectacle of life, mistakenly believes himself to be the main character. (Post-irony).

The Great Luminary! What would your radiance mean without those to whom it gives life? For ten years you have been ascending to my cave, but you would have had enough of the road and the splendor if it hadn't been for me, my eagle and the snake.
