Formed in 1689 in opposition to James II as the 23rd Regiment of Foot. In 1702 it was renamed The Welch Regiment of Fusiliers. They saw fighting in the War of the Spanish Succession. In 1713 they were renamed The Royal Welch Regiment of Fusiliers. They saw action in the American War of Independence. They saw action during the Napoleonic Wars, fighting at the battle of Waterloo. They saw action in the Crimean War fighting at Alma, Inkerman and Sevastapol. They were renamed The Royal Welsh Fusiliers. During the First World War they fought across the Western, Turkish and Italian fronts at battles such as Mons, Le Cateau, Marne, Aisne, Messines, the 1st battle of Ypres, Neuve Chapelle, Aubers Bridge, Festubert, Loos, the Somme (1916), the Hindenburg Line, Arras, Cambrai, the Somme (1918), Lys, Selle, Passchendaele, Vittorio Veneto and Gallipoli. They were renamed The Royal Welch Fusiliers. They saw action during the Second World War. In 2006 they were amalgamated with the Royal Regiment of Wales, forming the Royal Welsh.
