You know, the whole game can go from scary as hell to surprisingly depressing.
Think of it like this: The kids were all murdered and stuffed into the suits, right?
Well, maybe they tried to flee to the security office for safety. They could be stuck in a horrifying loop of trying to run from the murderer, and this happens each night. Foxy bang on the door as a way of begging you, or Mike, to let him in, to save his life. Chica looks in the window to make sure the murderer isn't there, Bonnie will try to surprise you while you are watching the cameras.
Don't let the guard down he is closer than you think.
You begin to sweat because your battery is running low, more and more you ask yourself: When it is about six o'clock of the morning? It's too late for you, Golden Freddy is opposite you, Bonnie will tear you apart, Foxy's baring her sharp teeth, Freddy will make it hard to breath, Chica's roaring with laughter.
And the clock sounds...It's six o'clock! I'm free!, but you realize that this game cannot be beaten. All the animatronics rush on you, you can't scape, they took you into the Parts and Service room and...this is how you become one of us! WELCOME TO THIS CLUB!

Backstory

There is a "Rules for Safety" sign in the East Hall Corner that is randomly replaced by newspaper articles throughout the game. These articles reveal certain elements of the game's lore and backstory.

Freddy Fazbear's Pizza was once a popular restaurant for adults and children alike. However, due to a number of incidents including the kidnapping and implied murder of five children by a man wearing an empty animatronic suit, sanctions by the Health Department over the numerous reports of dirtiness, and "The Bite of '87", the pizzeria has fallen on hard times. Freddy Fazbear's Pizza is set to close by the end of the year, as potential buyers do not want to be associated with the tainted reputation of the company.

The four mascots - Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie the Bunny, Chica the Chicken, and Foxy the Pirate had a particularly foul odor and what appeared to be "blood and mucus" around their eyes and mouths, which concerned parents had interpreted as "reanimated carcasses".

The Phone Guy remarks in Night 1's phone message that the animatronics haven't been cleaned in their 20+ years of service, which would explain the nasty odor. The stench could also be attributed to a popular theory that the missing children were stuffed into the animatronic suits after they were killed, and that their decomposing bodies were producing the repulsive smell. Supposedly, due to the risk of their servos locking up from disuse, the animatronics have been left in a "free roaming mode" at night over the years. They used to be able to roam freely during the day as well, but The Bite of '87 caused the pizzeria to put a stop to this.
