QD News - Growing Your Squad

Greetings, Privateers!

In the past, we have mentioned in passing the ability to clone your deceased squad mates, in the event they don’t make it back alive. Today, we’re going to take a look at the other benefit of the cloning lab - growing your squad! In the early game, you begin your journey with two squad members, or 3, if you’ve selected a bonus squad member as your starting perk. These intrepid privateers will serve you well in the beginning. However, as you go, you will find that your team could use some extra muscle, and this means adding more members to your squad.

There are two ways to gain new squad-mates: cloning and hiring. Cloning requires matter - the higher the level of the person being cloned, the higher the matter cost involved. Required matter is displayed for you when you’ve selected a squad member. When you clone, your shiny new person will start life at the same level as the one they were cloned from, and with the same stats. They won’t start with any gear, so be prepared to gear up your new clone!

Hiring new members requires money, and can be done at a market station. In situations where you have more money than matter, it presents a second option to expand your team. You can recruit new teammates for a fee, who will start with randomized stats. Unlike cloned recruits, these hired guns will have starting gear, and highlighting them will let you compare them with your current crew. Available recruits change at regular intervals, so you can keep checking back to see if anyone catches your eye.

Whether you take on the journey in hardcore permadeath mode, or in normal mode with cloning, expanding your crew is a vital part of being able to tackle harder worlds at higher levels. As always, thanks for reading, and we’ll see you next time for more QD News!

Greetings, Privateers!

Over the last several months, we’ve talked a lot about game mechanics, the world, and the way things work in Pixel Privateers. Today, we’re going to take a look at some of what lives in that world, and brings it to life. The local wildlife is quite varied, and you’ll find yourself encountering various types of critters. Some are passive, such as birds and beetles. You’ll quickly notice which types will attack you on sight, and which you can let alone. Passive mobs can definitely be killed, if you’re having that kind of day, but can be left to wander if you’re in a hurry.

Hostile mobs will range from alien creatures, to members of the various factions which inhabit the Privateers universe. They will employ everything they can to take you down. Some will hit you with nasty status effects, damage over time, AoE damage, or even spawning other mobs. As you learn to identify the factions, you’ll also notice that they drop different types of gear unique to them.

On your journey through space, you’ll also encounter boss fights which will require strategy, preparation, and probably a fair bit of coming back from the dead! The encounters with bosses are a nod to old-school action games, in that you have to learn what specific tactics will work against them. Blindly shooting and hoping for the best will only land you back in the cloning lab to lick your wounds. We won’t be spoiling any of our bosses though, those are for the community to discover!

One thing is certain, the universe is crawling with new life forms for you to discover, and you’ll never lack for baddies to slay as you go along.
