How Eastern Orthodox Christians See God — The Holy Trinity

Eastern Orthodox Christians believe in the one true God the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit “one in essence and undivided.”
God is not three gods, but one God in three divine Persons (hypostases), sharing one divine essence (ousia): uncreated, eternal, and beyond comprehension.

The Father is the unbegotten Source, the Son is begotten of the Father before all ages, and the Holy Spirit proceeds eternally from the Father. All three are co-eternal, co-equal, and of one divine nature.

The Holy Trinity in Scripture
“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” Matthew 28:19

Jesus Christ is God
“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.” — John 14:6
“I and the Father are one.” — John 10:30
“I am the Alpha and the Omega.” — Revelation 22:13

Throughout Scripture, Christ reveals Himself as the eternal Word (Logos) of God, consubstantial with the Father, and the Savior of the world.

The Eastern Orthodox Church

The Eastern Orthodox Church is one of the three main branches of Christianity, with over 300 million faithful worldwide. It consists of self-governing (autocephalous) and self-ruling (autonomous) Churches, united in one faith, tradition, and Eucharistic communion. Though diverse in culture Greek, Slavic, Middle Eastern, and more all share the same theology and worship.

The word Orthodox comes from Greek: orthos (“right”) and doxa (“glory” or “belief”) meaning “true faith” or “right worship.”

Rooted in the faith of the early Church and the teachings of the Ecumenical Councils, Orthodoxy developed in the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, preserving the fullness of the ancient Christian faith.

Life and Worship

For the Orthodox Christian, theology is not only studied it is lived.
Worship (liturgia) is the heart of our faith, expressing the truth handed down from the Apostles. Through the Divine Liturgy, sacraments, fasting, prayer, and icons, we enter into communion with the Living God.

The Holy Spirit guides and sanctifies the Church through bishops, priests, and all the faithful the Body of Christ. To live the Orthodox life is to strive for theosis: union with God through repentance, humility, and participation in the divine life of the Holy Trinity.

God be with you all!
