It is sometimes referred to as "Magic Mint", "Diviner's Sage", "ska María Pastora", and on the street as simply "Sally D". Salvia Divinorum rarely produces viable seeds and is thought to be either a hybrid or a cultigen, producing vegetatively.

The active compound present in Salvia Divinorum is a diterpenoid referred to as Salvinorin A. Well known terpenoids include citral, menthol, camphor, and cannabinoids found in Cannabis. The active compound in virtually all hallucinogenic plants are alkaloids, making Salvia Divinorum truly unique.

Studies have shown that Salvia Divinorum could be utilized for it's anti-depressant effects as well as it's anti-addictive properties. Salvinorin A stimulates the kappa-opioid receptors in the brain which could be the reason for it's anti-addictive attributes.
