This group was started by "Mephy", a boy who was born in 1993, who claims himself to be an "80s movie/music enthusiast*".

We welcome all who are either, usually: (1) Born in the 80s and miss it or (2) Love the era, wished they were born in it or simply appreciate its trends.
Your friends may mock you for being "old-fasioned" or a "total space cadet" (sorry.) but in our group, we welcome all who love the 80s pop culture and it's influences alike.

Perhaps you were intrigued by the Second British Invasion and the then-new music scene of New Wave genre or the New Romantic subculture. Your favorite bands were Culture Club, The Human League and Depeché Mode. More of a rocker, are you? What about Def Leppard, Whitesnake, The Smiths, Judas Priest and Dire Straits. Maybe you were interested in Vangelis' composition work in the movie, "Blade Runner" or Harold Faltermeyer's well-known works from "Top Gun" and "Beverly Hills Cops".

I bet your favorite movies are that of the late John Hughes, who made such radical (sorry.) teenage classics as "The Breakfast Club" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" or you were all about the sci-fi films. You watched the tube (television) and your favorite shows (or syndicated reruns of them) were the A-Team, MacGyver, Miami Vice and Knight Rider. And for some, every Saturday morning, it was He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, GI Joe, Thundercats or even Jem.

Huh? You are an "old skool" gamer, you say? Then you probably are a fan of the SNES/NES/Sega-Genesis and knew about the Bit Wars and the unfortunate North America's video game crash of 1983. Your favorite titles were Contra and the ever-timeless Super Mario Bros.

We too like all of those things and we welcome all who have the same interests as us, so welcome!

Belated Happy 2022 and 500 members milstone

Hello again, everyone. I just wanted to check in on the group and say I'm still around, and I hope everyone is as well. This is a late milestone announcement, but better late than never!

First of all, I would like to thank everyone for helping us reach the 500 members milestone. When I first made this group, I always thought it would remain at a modest 10 or 20 members because it was mostly me and some friends - just a bunch of '90s babies barely scraping the surface. But, to my surprise, we've quietly gained members over the years despite its dormant state and some of us growing up and apart. Of course, it's still a mystery to me, but as they say, don't look a gift horse in the mouth. But for that, I'm glad you're all here, and I thank you all again for being one of the reasons I feel comfortable with my interests.

Health-wise, I have been doing much better since my last announcement. I won't go into details, but it should be under control now. And regarding the previous announcement's proposal for group movie nights, I've gotten no response for that, but the door stays open. Finally, a small shout-out to the music sharing thread that's still active - it's the little things that count!

And now, I will address the elephant(s) in the room. I didn't make an announcement for the 400 members milestone because I figured I should wait for the 500 members milestone instead before making another announcement. Then 2020 happened, and boy did it happen.

There is too much to mention here, but the obvious is that the pandemic was the last thing anyone needed. It hasn't been the best of times for everyone, myself included. My biggest advice to everyone is to be there for each other. Yes, it is hard right now, but it will be much harder when we forget those around us who are also struggling. Sometimes it slips from our minds that there are those who care and want to see us get better. Simply asking each other about our days can mean the world. If there was a time to be decent to one another, it is now and has been for the last two years. We are all in this together and should never forget who we were before. Remember that the world truly falls apart when we let ourselves.

I apologize for the brief rant; I felt it was important for everyone to hear.

With that said, I hope everyone is enjoying their summer winter so far. I know these last two years have been a confusing mess for everyone, and we're all hoping 2022 will take a turn for the better. I firmly believe we will get there if we hold on together.

300 members milestone!

Hello again, everyone and happy Fourth of July to some of you! Initially, I was going to wait until 2020 to write something but I figured it's been awhile since the last announcement. Did I read that right? 300 members! I'm not sure where the new faces are coming from but thank you for joining!

Just as the last milestone announcement, I hope everyone is having a great summer so far. I know it's particularly hectic right now due to the Steam summer sales event. I've been battling with my own health as of last year, but that's a story for another time; I'm doing well enough for the time being.

I've been pitching the idea of hosting movie nights/days for the group if possible. There are no restrictions to genres (but still preferably '80s), but it is required that I can find it somewhere or have it on me. Of course, this is if there is enough people for it. The other big concern is time zone and how this can be arranged for most of us. If anyone has an idea on how we can work this out, please let me know! As of right now, my time is pretty flexible aside from the fact I live on the other side of the world.

On a side note, I am aware that the group's comment section remained closed off a couple of years ago in spite of what the last milestone announcement states. This was a precaution. Someone outside of the group messaged me and asked me to open the comments section but did not elaborate why. I want to take this time to ask the group directly how we can prevent any future spams from bored, malicious types. As it stands, I pondering over a few options:

A) Newer members have to be approved before joining so that the comments section (available to every member) doesn't get used improperly. This makes it easier for us to keep the group clean but will be discouraging for people who prefer a group openly joinable.

B) Keep the group open but limit permissions to the comments section. The comments section remains reserved for promoted members (administrators and moderators) to communicate with the group when an announcement is not necessary. I think this is the most reasonable one since anything else goes into Discussions threads.This is the current system.

C) Group remains open but so do comments. If the comments section get raided, it will get closed again until further notice.
