(NOTE 2: A lot of these only work on Windows)

Here is what we (Deeakron L and Deeakron M) recommend for recording gameplay and commentary (note, these should all be free), plus some extras, depending on how far you want to go:

Gameplay recording: LioLo Game Recorder

Works even better than Dxtory! I know this because Dxtory's sound recordings fall behind on long loading screens, while LoiLo keeps up.

Commentary recording (NOTE: you still need a mic for this to work): Audacity

Just hook up the mic, and click the record button! It also allows you to remove audio noise such as static.

Compilation: Windows Movie Maker
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-live/movie-maker
Use this to combine the audio and video tracks, as it is probably not a good idea to record audio and video in the same track.

Outros with video overlays: Microsoft Expression Encoder 4

Using this, you can have video in a video outros like a lot of popular Youtubers. If you need help using this, just ask!

Also, if you are using video-in-a-video outros, you might want to use Windows Movie Maker to create short clips and create combined audio.
