The voices in my head never introduce themselves. They don’t need to. They speak like they’ve always been there, like they’ve been waiting to be heard. At first they sounded like my own thoughts. Now they argue with each other. Sometimes about me.

They talk when I’m awake. Louder when I’m tired. Very patient.

They are in my walls. Houses make noise, I know. Pipes rattle. Wood settles. But this is different. Scratching that stops when I stop breathing. Knocking that answers itself from inside.

I tried music. I tried prayer. The voices laughed. They said pretending is how they get closer.
