After a while of fiddling around in the controller settings, I finally got the swipes feeling good! The trick is to use the "Left/Right Booster Move (via Joystick)" options, rather than the plain Booster Move options; after doing that, make sure Trackball Mode is on, and set friction to Off. This translates a swipe in any direction, anywhere on the pad, into a joystick movement in the direction you swiped, thus registering as a swipe in the game....
