The GOG version which runs on Dosbox is impossible to finish because it keeps crashing all the time, is this different than it?

Has anyone tried this on steam deck? If not I'll buy it and let yall know. I'm just trying to save a return.

Apologies for my lack of understanding but how do I change the gears when I'm playing on keyboard? The arrow keys only revs the engine but the car itself doesnt move.
