in 2006 Dreamfall was innovative and controversial. it was a long-awaited sequel that suddenly distanced itself from the original in many ways. a frustrating move for old fans but a really smart one if you look at it from a legacy standpoint. The Longest Journey (1999) was left behind in history, but Dreamfall stayed with us much longer.

why did that happen? i guess the game was pretty cinematic, which was especially cool in 2006, with good music, style, a feel-good mood and a very attractive main character, Zoë.

what's interesting to me personally is that the story of Dreamfall never felt particularly good. its narrative was, yes, but not the story itself. a bit pointless, no proper ending. it leaves you with more questions than answers, like a TV pilot, not a standalone story.

and Funcom/Tornquist were good with that kind of storytelling. The Secret World was based completely on Dreamfall's blueprints (that's why I think it worked for a while despite its gameplay).

it's always a great journey but don't expect a great ending or an ending at all.
