Everyone you meet in Sysiluoma is a real person

Hello everyone!

One of the questions I've been asked most often is how the characters in The Polar Darkness are made.

The short answer is: every character you meet in the game is a real person.

Rather than creating traditional 3D character models, I photograph each person individually and use those photographs as the foundation for high-resolution character sprites. They are then carefully integrated into stylized 3D environments, where they react to lighting, cast shadows, and become part of the world rather than simply appearing on top of it.

The idea came from wondering what the classic FMV adventure games of the 1990s might look like if they were made with today's technology.

Getting everything to work convincingly has been one of the biggest technical challenges of the project. The photographs need to be processed into sprites, the lighting has to match every scene, and each environment has to be carefully color graded so that the characters feel like they truly belong there.

The end result is something that sits somewhere between a traditional 2D adventure game and a fully 3D world. It gives the characters a grounded, photographic quality while still allowing me to build cinematic environments and camera angles. The approach is also intentionally uncanny, which fits the game's blend of Lovecraftian horror and and Finnish folklore particularly well.

One of my favorite aspects of this approach is that every face you see belongs to a real person. Friends, family members, and volunteers have all helped bring the village to life by stepping in front of the camera. It has turned the project into something much more personal than I originally imagined.

Because the characters are based on real people, they naturally have the small imperfections that make human faces believable. These kinds of details are often smoothed away in traditional character art. This grounded, lived-in quality makes the people of Sysiluoma feel like they could genuinely inhabit a small Finnish village during the 1980s.

I use myself as an example, and I'm happy to report that the beard I shaved for this has already grown back.

Are you in my dreams?

This is something I've long thought about. Like why haven't developers utilized modern technology to bring that FMV look to the HD (and 4K) era. Personally I would have utilized photography even for the backgrounds but still this looks very neat and I'm looking forward to seeing how the final game feels....

Why I Chose the Finnish Polar Night as the Setting for The Polar Darkness

Hello everyone!

I thought I'd use this first development update to talk about one of the biggest inspirations behind The Polar Darkness: the Finnish polar night, or Kaamos.

I'm a solo developer from Finland, and I've loved adventure games ever since I was old enough to read English. Games like Gabriel Knight showed me how atmosphere, mystery, and memorable characters could carry an entire experience. With The Polar Darkness, I wanted to create a similar slow-burning mystery, but one rooted in Finnish folklore and Lovecraftian cosmic horror. Also, Stanley Kubrick's The Shining and True Detective's first season have influenced on the atmosphere of the game.

When people hear about the polar night, they often imagine complete darkness for months. The reality is a little different. During Kaamos, the sun doesn't rise above the horizon, but snow reflects what little light there is, creating long, dim days unlike anywhere else in the world. Familiar places suddenly feel strange, forests become eerily quiet, and darkness simply becomes part of everyday life.

That atmosphere felt like the perfect setting for a mystery.

In The Polar Darkness, you play as journalist Emma Järvelä, who travels to a remote northern village to write an article about a child preacher. When the child disappears during a church sermon and a blizzard cuts the village off from the outside world, what begins as a seemingly ordinary assignment slowly turns into something far more unsettling.

Visually, I wanted the game to feel as unique as its setting. Rather than using traditional 3D character models, every character begins as a photograph of a real person. Those photographs are carefully processed into high-resolution sprites and blended into stylized 3D environments, creating a look inspired by the FMV adventure games of the 1990s while taking advantage of modern technology.
