Devlog: Multiplayer HUD Overhaul, Connection Safety & Self-Play Analysis

Hey everyone, solo dev here! I've been polishing the multiplayer experience to make matches more strategic, visual, and stable. Here is a quick, to-the-point list of what is now live:

⏱️ Clocks & Turn HUD

Right HUD Thematic Clocks: Moved timers to custom, board-themed clock cards on the right side of the board. Features dynamic Steam name displays and a centerpiece turn banner ("YOUR MOVE" / "OPPONENT'S MOVE") that pulses colors using sine-wave animations.
Desync-free Timers: Changed to client clock authority. Your client ticks down your clock, and your opponent's ticks down theirs, syncing the remaining time and +5s increment on every move. No more false timeouts due to packet latency.
Clean UI: Hidden campaign passive displays ("+10/s") in multiplayer.

🔌 Reconnections & Game Flow

Inactivity Warning: Added a "RECONNECTING..." overlay if no packets are received from the opponent for 60 seconds. Transitions to a disconnect screen after a 5-second grace period where you can claim a victory immediately.
Color-Swap Rematch: Added a "REMATCH (X/2)" button. Voting resets the board and swaps player colors (former Host plays White, former Joiner plays Black).
Instant Re-queue: Added a "PLAY AGAIN" button on match completion that leaves the lobby and queues you up for a new matchmaking lobby immediately.

🧠 Self-Play (Analysis) Mode

Local Opening Study: Added a "Self-Play (Analysis)" button at the bottom of the multiplayer mode menu. Move pieces for BOTH colors locally turn-by-turn to test opening combinations.
Balanced Stats: Uses multiplayer base stats (King HP 15, Queen HP 12, flat damage, Pawn front attacks) without clocks or network replication.
Reset & Quit Actions: Includes a quick Reset Board button to clear the board and restore pieces, plus a Quit button to return to the menu cleanly.

Another Auto Play Bug and other suggestions

I commented on the other thread but since it was already marked done I thought I should mention it separately. When the opponent king captures on F7 square, it always locks up auto play. This is very specific and very reproducible. Also when this happens, and you have to click on main menu to get out of this lock, the selections in the options reset to Music and SFx back to on. UI patches and Controller Issues Fixed

Multiplayer Mode Fixes

1. Fixed An issue on controller controls being reverted same as UI tooltips (still a bug of the tooltip going off screen at the top (will be fixed)

2. Fixed a UI issue when playing as black in multiplayer mode it would say Enemy Pawn On black pieces

3. Allowed the ability to play in a private lobby with friends

General UI Fix

Fixed an issue of gold gain going off screen at the top of the board

Devlog: Steam Peer-to-Peer Multiplayer Beta Update

I am excited to release the Online Multiplayer (Beta) directly to the default branch! Challenge other players online using secure Steam Peer-to-Peer lobbies and matchmaking.

🛠️ What's New & Fixed

Steam P2P Multiplayer (Beta): Find and play matches against other players using your base chess piece stats (campaign upgrades and abilities are disabled for a balanced matchup).
Resign Confirmation: Pause during multiplayer matches to resign; includes a confirmation popup to avoid accidental resignations.
Opponent Names: Identify who you are playing against with the new "VS \[Steam Name]" HUD indicator.
Black Perspective Flip: Playing as Black now flips the board visually, including all particle effects, floating damage numbers, and gamepad selectors.
Pawn Rule Correction: Fixed a chess rules bug so Pawns can now attack pieces directly in front of them even if they also have diagonal captures or moves available.
Sound FX Fixes: Corrected Web Audio Context initialization issues so game sounds play correctly after initiating multiplayer matchmaking.
UI Cleanup: Automatically hides campaign progress bars, save game buttons, and floating [c]+0[/c] gold texts during active multiplayer matches.

ANNOUNCEMENT!

Taking a break from working on the game for now. But that doesn't mean the game is fully done, I still have a lot planned for the future of this game. Such as new upgrades for the rebirth token shop and some general rebalancing. This is because I am working on another project at the moment. But any feedback is greatly appreciated. Roadmap February 2026

For the month of February in 2026 I plan on updating the game majorly 1. Is two new upgrades added to the rebirth token shop for diversibility, I won't spoil what they are now, just be prepared to catch some glowing enemies while ticking down their hp 2. Controller Support. This is a big one, I plan on releasing to console, specifically Xbox first. So this is preparing for a console release!
