First Demo Update (and a Dairy Question)

The Feed the Scorchpot demo has been live for over a week, and I’m really happy to see so many people playing and enjoying the game. Some players have already surpassed what I thought was possible in the demo. I even saw someone reach Year 46.

In just a few days, we gathered a lot of great feedback, which gave me a much clearer idea of what to focus on next. There is always more accessibility work that can make the game easier to approach.

I went back to the tutorial and addressed many of the issues new players were struggling with. I added new tooltips, clarified confusing elements, and fixed several bugs reported by players.

The demo update is now live. I hope this helps more people have fun with the game.

All of these changes are quick adjustments. There is still plenty of deeper work and balancing ahead.

And one more thing…

Here’s a question I didn’t think I’d be asking: sheep or cows?

To me, sheep felt like the obvious choice for decorating the dairy tiles. They’re cute, and my favorite cheese is made from sheep’s milk (bryndza). However, some feedback suggested that sheep aren’t an obvious dairy animal for many players.

So I’d love to hear from more of you. Should we swap the sheep for cows?

It’s your turn to cook for the dragon

I have been teasing the demo for a while, and the day is finally here. Surprisingly, right on schedule. You can jump in and play the game right now.

Even though this is just a demo, it offers several hours of board-building gameplay. In the full release, each run will be generated from a random seed. For the demo, I hand-picked several seeds to showcase different gameplay scenarios, but you are still free to experiment and try different strategies to beat the available runs.

The game runs great on Steam Deck, includes full controller support, features a built-in tutorial, and has ten achievements made specifically for the demo.

What is not included in the demo?

Additional building upgrades
Unique dice
Rerolling for new recipes in shop
A full roster of dragons, each with unique gameplay
Complete difficulty progression, including truly demanding dragon appetites
The full deckbuilding system that lets you shape each run
Meta progression systems
A significant amount of planned QoL improvements
Many additional art assets

New year, new name

This update took a bit longer than intended, but there was a reason for it (apart from just taking a break over Christmas). Well… Dragon Fodder is no more!

Yeah. As it turns out, out of all the names I could have picked for the game, I went with one that was already taken. Even though I researched the name before committing to it a year ago, I missed a point-and-click adventure currently in development under the same name. And, as it turns out, the developer of that game has the name trademarked.

Fortunately, this happened early enough that it doesn’t really interfere with everything planned for 2026 (and there’s a lot!). So the team at Indieformer and I decided to treat this as an opportunity rather than a problem. We brainstormed a new title that fits the game and will hopefully avoid any similar issues in the future.

So, for the first time ever, this is Feed the Scorchpot, our dragon-feeding roguelite!

I’m very lucky that my wife is such a talented artist. She made the new art in record time, and I love how it looks.

Steam Deck Compatibility

Will there be a deck version? It's OK already and I played an hour easily. I need to do the tutorial again for the multipliers and upgrading to make sense.

Main issue is UI visibility issues

All the UI elements have fairly similar visual style. This makes buttons look like background information and background information look like buttons. Part of this is the sketchy aesthetic all has similar saturation, but the styles between buttons and "things in boxes" themselves are fairly similar, IMHO. Additionally, lots of tutorials and tooltips mention types of terrain, but there is no actual in-game mapping between the tooltip, the resource, and the terrain type on the map. I love it! some thoughts

It took me quite a while to figure out what each tile type was. There's color-coding on the right, but mousing over the tile itself just tells you the number not that it is Grain / etc I sold my farmstead to make room for a farmstead lvl2. then of course i couldnt build it because it doesnt work that way. that hurt and felt pretty bad.
