I really wish I could recommend this game, but I just can't. If I could leave a neutral review I would, but since that's not possible I have to not recommend it, at least for anyone that has similar preferences to me. Before I get into it, I highly recommend that people check out Reventure instead of this.

I have a lot of issues with this game, with one of the biggest ones being the controls. With so many other review talking about it, I won't say too too much. But this isn't a review from someone playing for an hour; I beat the entire game, getting most stuff (including golden chests) along the way, and am currently sitting at 90% completion. Even after almost 6 hours, I still think the controls are wicked clunky and not fun to play with. I never once felt rewarded for "skillfully mastering" the controls whenever I got a treasure, I was just relived to finally be able to move on from that one specific "challenge". The controls being bad only really matters because of the biggest issue with the game that I haven't seen almost anyone else talk about, the structure.

The biggest hook of this game is figuring out what moves you can do, and I can honestly say that all of the aha moments I had right at the beginning of the game were the best part, but those ran out incredibly quickly. The second chest I got in world 2 was the golden chest, which I got using the more advanced techniques that game has to offer. By that point, I had already figured out 90%+ of the games mechanics and had mostly run out of those aha moments. Once those are gone you are left only with the platforming, which is why it's such an issue that the game controls so poorly. After that golden chest, all that was really left was platforming challenges, which weren't fun due to the controls, and occasional puzzles for chests which weren't hard to solve but generally tedious to execute. The structure of Reventure was soooooo much better. While you got later into the game, there was definitely some tedium in getting things setup, but there was always the satisfaction of figuring out new item interactions and the satisfaction of planning and executing a trip around the world to get a specific ending. Reventure captured me the entire time I was playing it due to its structure (and humor, which is desperately lacking here), I was bored of Moventure after the first hour.

The last bit I'll talk about is just the general feeling of "jank". A lot of the time, whenever I would solve something, I couldn't tell if I was doing it the intended way or not, because while it didn't feel right, it didn't look like there was another solution. There were also multiple instances of it on a more macro level. I'm someone that likes to complete things as I go, but (I have to assume) due to the inclusion of Nara's quest, there were many instances of one-ways that you simply cannot go back from. I was lucky I turned around after getting the World 2 golden chest, had I not, I wouldn't've been able to get most chests in that world. This happened to me in world 4, where I went just a little too far and got trapped past a mountain above, and gated off water below. The biggest issue of macro jank was definitely the World 7 "softlock" that others have talked about, where you can "get stuck" by going down Nara's path. While you can get out, it requires resetting the screen while you launch your hat, and you get nothing for going through a gauntlet of challenging platforming.

Unfortunately, the issues with this game go far beyond the "difficulty" of the controls and an "easy" mode is not something that can fix the base structural and more macro issues with the game. I was really hoping for something better after loving Reventure so much. I'll keep an eye out for what this dev makes next, but it definitely won't be an insta-buy after this experience.

I was excited about this game because I really like Reventure. The description made it sound like it was going to be a puzzle game based on the movement of the character, but it really feels more like a rage game. Even after figuring out what moves your character can do, and how to execute them, sometimes the execution is so precise that it's really tough to get through.

And it's tough to do the moves you want to do, even once you know them. Limiting to so few buttons is an interesting stylistic choice, but having so many moves overloaded onto so few controls makes it tough to ever achieve what you'd like.

I think as a rage game it probably works great. Just not for me

I really wanted to like this game because I had it wishlisted for a while. But the controls are just horrendous. Even Getting Over It feels like you have more control over your character.

To be more specific, there's 3 main things that felt really bad to play. And I will list how they could be improved aswell.

1. Like in any platformer you want to get a feel for the physics and controls at the starts. But while testing things out, you randomly execute movement techs you did not intend to and don't even know how you did it. You don't figure out how to execute new moves, you rather fight to not execute them doing basic things.

This could be fixed by either disabling movements until they are needed (which could still lead to confusion) or by having a menu with discovered moves that let's you toggle them. So you can focus on the moves you need and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

2. The flow of the movement gets interupted so often. Like trying to build up momentum for a jump, I bumped into the wall behind me so often just because I held down sprinting while walking back 2 steps. And everytime it happens you are locked in a 2 second animation where your player gets back up. Losing control over your character like that disrupts the flow and smooth feel of the game. Same goes for other things where you just get stunned for a tiny mistake like not holding jump trying to walljump.

Can easily be fixed by either removing the stun and just keeping the visual effects or by only making them happen after you run for a certain amount of time.

3. And lastly some moves just feel clunky and bad. Especially walljumps. Needing to hold jump while you make contact (or bump your head and die) and then jumping off as you release is such an awful choice to make a walljump. Especially when you have to chain them together with other walljumps or moves feels incredibly janky. Having to hold up to glide also feels off. I'd say these two are some of the basic moves you use the most, so they should not feel janky. Actually all moves that require fast execution or precision should be intuitive.

I have only played about 1 hour and have not seen all of the moves, but I'm sure there are more like that. And I can imagine it's hard to get 100 moves to work with only 6 buttons, but there has to be a better solution to them.

This was not everything, but the things that made it most unfun for me.
