Patch v3.1.1

Well, I'd planned a larger first week patch, but unfortunately there weren't enough bugs to fix. It seems the game is quite bug-free as it is. Apologies for that. I will ensure there are more bugs in future patches, that can then be fixed in patches for the patches.

Improvements

When starting a new chapter, game logic will prefer to pick an unseen spirit NPC instead of reusing an existing one. Once all NPCs are used at least once, it will pick at random instead. This ensures you get a good variety of NPCs in the early game.
Slightly different main menu after finishing the main game.
Ending cinematic can be viewed from Fun Stuff after finishing the main game.

Bug fixes

Tweaked some text to make it clearer that Spirit Report can be done after Data Entry, and that player can return to skipped reports later in the game.
Fixed a typo (Seimi → Seimei)
Image files are no longer shown as [FILE LOCKED] in the Spirit Report evidence browser.
When continuing from the End of Chapter screen, the desk/letter for the next week will now be shown even if there is no interlude for the next week (affected post-game content)
Main menu: Blocked being able to open “Manage Data” menu if another menu is already open.
Station locations board now hidden when moving to a new station.
Redid modern Ochanomizu pic to be better lined up.

A few notes after Thursday's release...

Thank you!

After over a year of work, I released Mysteries of Old Tokyo two days ago. It has been a strange feeling - or rather, feelings - anxiety and excitement and dread and joy all wrapped into one.

But I needn't have worried. It has been an amazing release - hundreds of people have already played the game. I shot through my first month target in about five hours. And by all accounts, you're really enjoying it! Which is awesome. For such a strange niche genre, I'm so happy to find it has resonated with so many people.

What really blows my mind is that (touch wood) there have been no major bugs reported yet. I'm sure there are still bugs out there ... but I'll let them sleep for now.

Even if you haven't finished it yet - even if it's not a very long review - reviews are so important on Steam for the algorithm, especially the first 10 reviews[howtomarketagame.com]. At the moment there are 3. It would be awesome to get to 10 in this first week, and it'll only take you a few minutes! Leave a review here.

Future plans

Planned updates

There are a few minor bugs found before release, which will be fixed for the next update.
New achievements! Where possible, these will be configured so that you don't need to replay the game to unlock them (just launch the game with your existing save file).
I am still waiting to hear back from Steam regarding the Steam Deck Linux build. Hopefully this will be resolved soon, which will fix the text issues caused by the Proton runtime. I'd also like to move the game towards official Verified status for Steam Deck.
Some of the early puzzles are a little too easy/straightforward. At some point I'd like to run through and make these a bit more complex.
Some slightly more out-there ideas:
- Sidequests, minigames and temples that give out fortunes.
- Help for Japanese language learners (mouse-over kanji definitions, etc.).
- A treasure cabinet in your office that updates when you unlock treasures.

DLC

The nice thing about the format of the game is that it lends itself well to DLC. There's so much more of Tokyo's history to explore, and when I was in Tokyo last, I found a brand new set of postcards in an awesome shop in Jimbocho.

Some of these are existing locations in the game - in which case it would be cool to add them to the core game as "alternative views" - while others are new, like the Akasaka Detached Palace here. I can imagine a small DLC with maybe 2 chapters (6 puzzles) incorporating some of these new postcards as well as new puzzles for some of the core game postcards. I will, of course, keep you updated as plans progress.

Escape from Tokyo Achievement

Any idea how to get the "Escape from Tokyo" achievement? I'm only missing 2 achievements (the other one is the 'view all trivia' one which should be easy enough) but I'm not sure how to get this achievement or where to go for it.

Out Now On Steam!

Hello, Tokyoites!

I'm excited to announce that Mysteries of Old Tokyo is now available for purchase on Steam. You can get it now with a 10% launch discount!

This game has very much been a labour of love for over a year now, and I'm really excited for you to get to play it.

I hope very much that you enjoy it. As I've said, it might not be the best game ever, but I think it's the best Mysteries of Old Tokyo ever. I don't think there's ever quite been a game in this genre like this: whether you have visited Tokyo once, twice, zero or a hundred times, I'm certain you'll discover something new about this amazing city, and have a lot of fun while learning.

The demo will remain on Steam indefinitely, so please give it a whirl if you want to try the game first. It should give you a good idea of the full game, which features over five times as much content across 32 puzzles and 11 chapters of gameplay.

Improvements

Updated some text files and clue images.
Tweaked some puzzles.
Added letterbox (4:3) toggle to hide the sides of the screen.

Bug fixes

The “tutorial started” achievement should now unlock when loading a save, if it wasn’t already unlocked.
Fixed the number of slides on the Browse Postcard screen.
Scroll buttons should now actually scroll up and down. However, this has introduced an issue where some text boxes cannot be scrolled with the mouse scroll wheel. As a workaround, make sure the mouse cursor is over the scroll bar before using the scroll wheel.
Fixed an edge case where quitting/crashing after finishing the final chapter wouldn’t trigger the ending cinematic after reloading.
Music will now stop during the ending cinematic.
Fixed a weird freeze and crash caused by Yoshida specifically.

I previously played the demo and enjoyed it, so I was looking forward to getting this game when it released fully. Having done so, I am happy to say that it retains everything about the demo I enjoyed and then some. You can learn a lot about Japanese history and the story of the city of Tokyo that you would've never otherwise heard, and the game is very accessible while simultaneously not holding your hand all the way through. I found myself sad about the demolition and disappearances of buildings and places I hadn't even heard of before playing the game, and I became deeply invested in the narrative and the stories on display. The puzzles, while mechanically simple, can actually get pretty challenging and really tests your reading comprehension and ability to cross-reference the information you're given.

My only criticism at the moment would probably be the decision to remove the stamina system: I felt like it was a good incentive to use the train lines and really plan your route rather than just walk from Point A to Point B all over the map. I still prefer to use the train lines wherever I can but since they cost money while just walking costs nothing it feels a bit like kneecapping myself.

Otherwise I highly enjoyed this game and I strongly recommend it to those seeking a relaxing and educational puzzle game.

Finally, a game that combines the autistic need to point out the flaws in people's arguments with the autistic need to hyperfixate on a subject like the history of Tokyo (and its railway system.)

There seems to be some symbol/text issues on the Steam Deck for some location names but it works great on the Deck otherwise.

A pretty chill retro-styled edutainment experience (with a dash of supernatural), with the main focus being on early 20th century Tokyo.
Core gameplay loop involves going through article excerpts and cross-referencing information, so some bare minimum reading comprehension skills might be necessary!

Game Length

Hi! Can anyone give me a sense on the length of the game? Is the experience meant to be done in a single sitting or are there "chapters" that involve multiple mysteries? For a full completion run with all achievements what would an estimate of game time look like? Is the demo separate content or the first x pieces of the main game? Thanks...
