A Fresh Start | Dev Diary #1

Hello everyone, and welcome to the first official devlog for Last Summer.

My name is Tomek, and I founded Silent Lamb Studio to create new worlds, characters, and stories together with my friends from the game industry. Stories that express what lies deep within us, and captivate players with the immersive experiences we all seek as video game fans.

With over 18 years of experience in the industry and the successful release of many projects (horror included), I can confidently say that the most satisfying part of this work is creating your own worlds or universes and expanding them after release with increasing attention to detail through each update.

I once heard that every horror creator should have at least one project based on the classic trope: “A group of teenagers in the woods gets attacked by a killer." ;)

That's why I was especially excited about the opportunity that came up for the entire Silent Lamb team and me to create a brand-new asymmetric horror in exactly this format! Last Summer marks the beginning of a new chapter for us a new universe that aims to be more than just a one-off project or story.

Early Access

We chose the Early Access format to refine every aspect of the game with you, ensuring the full release meets both your expectations and ours. This is extremely important to us, because we don’t just make games for you, we make them for ourselves as well.

We create the kinds of games we would want to play, and we pour our entire gamedev hearts into them.

The Train Killer

Early Design of the Train Killer

As the art director and project lead, I was thrilled to finally bring to life a new “Killer” who had been growing in my mind (and in my sketch folder) for a long time. I believe the character’s background and lore will resonate with players and fit perfectly into the story of Last Summer.

The Train Killer is not just a random psychopath who appeared out of nowhere and decided to start killing while traveling by train. The deeper we dive into his story, the better we’ll understand why he does what he does and why he looks the way he does.

Last Summer is a story inspired by genre classics such as The Hills Have Eyes, Wrong Turn, Friday the 13th, and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, while also bringing a wealth of fresh ideas and solutions that will make the game truly unique.

One of our favorite thrillers is The Silence of the Lambs (who would’ve guessed, right?!). The entire camp where our unlucky campers find themselves contains numerous sheep-related motifs. Unfortunately, this once innocent and joyful place will become a silent witness to violence, paralyzed in the face of evil and brutality that will leave scars it will never forget.

We can’t wait to share more details with you about Last Summer, both in terms of gameplay and the world we are building around it.

your FAQ says that you are leaning towards 1v6 or 1v7, how do you plan on avoiding the pitfalls that Last year fell into? will campers be able to fight back? is the killer unkillable? what IRL playground game are the matches based on? hide and seek + tag like DBD, just hide and seek like carnival hunt? or something like last year where you play keep away with the exit goal and try to prevent them from escaping even if that means the best play is just to block the door with the toughest and tankiest kille...

The launch of the teaser trailer is right around the corner. While the BBQ is being cooked and drinks are clinking, we have prepared a special dive into the mystery behind "Engine 3912" and what led to its unfortunate events.

[c]Even in places where no train has run for years. [/c]

[c]And if you see a light in the forest… Run. [/c]

[c]Because if the train stops… It will already be too late to escape.[/c]

Back when steam locomotives were still in use, one of the private railway lines was suddenly shut down due to a tragic accident. Today, few people remember the Red Creek Line and locomotive No. 3912, but it was very different on the night of the disaster, March 7, 1952. That was when the area was shaken by a catastrophic accident in which 12 people died, some of them burned alive

The Red Creek Line was one of many private mountain railway lines serving a relatively small coal mine that employed just over 60 people, including those responsible for operating the locomotives and maintaining the tracks.

A large portion of the workers lived in company housing, forming so-called “railway families,” whose entire lives were tied to the railroad. Initially highly profitable, the mine eventually became unprofitable, leading to growing internal tensions among workers and the looming threat of the railway’s closure. The accident became the symbol that accelerated the inevitable.

The official version from the archives points to faulty brakes and poorly maintained tracks as the direct cause of the accident. However, older locals remember hearing screams coming from the speeding locomotive even before it derailed. Some of the crew operating the locomotive died instantly.

Due to boiler damage and overheating, a fire broke out, burning the rest of the trapped crew alive...

Walter Graves - The "Fireman"

Although no formal charges were ever brought, people blame the only survivor of the accident, the “Fireman” (Walter Graves), who was responsible for maintaining the fire in the locomotive. Instead of helping the survivors, he reportedly stood in silence, watching as the flames consumed them. Despite their screams and pleas for help, he did nothing. The official report states that the man was in shock, but the local community never believed in his innocence, holding him responsible for the entire tragedy.

The Red Creek Line was officially closed shortly after the accident, which served as a convenient and credible excuse for the owner not only to shut down the entire line but also to seek substantial compensation. All equipment was abandoned and written off as losses. After everything, most workers and their “railway families” left their company homes. Some, however, stayed behind, seeing no other alternatives.

Legend has it that those who remained, seeking shelter from the cold, gradually began moving into the mine, warming themselves by the still-functional locomotive furnace. It is said that the disgraced “Fireman” continues to tend the fire so that it never goes out, feeling responsible for what happened to the Red Creek Line.

Just wondering if there plans to make the Killer a bot like for private Custom Game with Survivor Friends against a Bot killer. Not gonna hate if you won't, just curious if there's plans for that. And Huge Best of Luck making this game, Take the time you need to make it into the Chef Kiss

Wow I can't believe this is happening

I want to say I really liked their ideas of putting maps that are based on horror movie franchises like scream 1 stu house. Will that still be making a return? Even if you have to change it a bit to make it original. Keep up the hardworking there are die hard fans of these types of games. Please create it with offline or pier to pier option in mind....
