April Devlog! 🕖

Hey everyone! 💚

April was a big month on multiple fronts! A major overhaul of how time works in the game, quality-of-life improvements from your demo feedback, and a lot of progress on Act 3!

⏱️ Complete Rework of the Time System

This was the most significant change of the month, and one that directly came from demo feedback. Many of you found the time periods too restrictive, only being able to tend to the goats in the morning, or only crafting once in the afternoon felt limiting and sometimes frustrating.

We agreed, and we rebuilt the system from scratch!

Time now passes in real time, at a rate of one in-game minute per second, from 7am to 7pm. After that, the game enters an open-ended evening mode, giving you time to chat with villagers and wind down before sleeping without any time pressure (Stardew Valley players know the 2am rush!)

In practice, this means you're no longer locked into specific activities at specific times of day. You can tend to the goats whenever you like, and craft multiple times throughout the day (as long as your wellbeing gauge allows it).

To give you more control, we also added time speed buttons so you can adjust how fast the day moves.

Benches now let you choose exactly how much time you want to skip (on top of restoring your wellbeing gauge) which makes it easy to jump ahead to the evening when you're ready.

It was a significant technical undertaking! References to the old time periods were scattered throughout the codebase, dialogues, and tutorials. We had to change and double check everything, but the result is well worth it!

🎒 Item Names

Another frequently requested change from demo players: item names are now displayed in the inventory and in Benno's shop! A small addition, but it makes navigating resources a lot more intuitive.

🏔️ Cliffs Get a Makeover

On the visual side, we spent a good chunk of the month sculpting the cliffs, which up until now were a bit flat and lacked depth.

We also implemented a new shader to bring them to life: it works with vertex colors, modulating the light of the rock texture. In addition to our previous shader drawing fine lines along the edges of the geometry, the difference is quite striking!

📖 Act 3: First Pass Complete

We reached a big internal milestone this month: a near-complete implementation of Act 3 in placeholder form, with stand-in assets and dialogue files in place across the whole act!

A few highlights of what's taking shape:

Thanks to the newly founded planks provided by Sebastian, you’ll be able to provide Peter with enough materials to build beehives!

Doing so will increase your bond with Peter, but also you’ll be able to collect honey, which will feed into new crafting options down the line.

His fossil collection (which you find through the mushroom digging mini-game) is also coming together nicely! Still a work in progress, we intend to add a proper progression mechanic to it 📈

We also started preparing Agnes' sprite to place her in the world alongside Sebastian, starting with meshes and a skeleton in Blender to work out her different poses.

And on the environment side, we started modeling the observatory and its wind turbine, where players will eventually meet Joanna, our new Act 3 character!

That's it for April! The game is really starting to come together, and we're looking forward to sharing more as Act 3 fills in.

March Devlog! 🌲

Hey everyone! 💚

March was a big month for us: our very first public demo launched on March 6th as part of the Women's Day Sale on Steam, and the response was wonderful. In one week, more than 2000 players explored the mountains with Heidi for the first time, and your feedback has already shaped a first round of updates. Thank you for playing and sharing your thoughts! 🐐

🛠️ Demo Fixes & Improvements

We made some updates to the demo: the most common feedback we received was about controls. We removed long-press mouse clicks in several places, including when talking to NPCs, to make things feel more fluid.

You can also hold the left mouse button to guide Heidi around (rather than only clicking somewhere). And to make interactive objects easier to spot, the cursor now changes shape when hovering over something you can interact with.

We also completely redesigned the dairy mini-game! Previously you could only produce one type of dairy product per morning, which many players found frustrating. The new version has you sliding tiles across a grid to form matching pairs! Each pair produces one of the three dairy products (milk, butter, or cheese), and the more pairs you form for a given type, the more of it you'll make. Much more flexible and fun overall.

Some players reported a bug where Heidi would float off the ground for a few frames. The culprit turned out to be the goats, when they got too close, their physics were pushing her upward. Fixed! 😅

Fixing the demo is cool, but we need to get working on the rest of the game!

🦘 Heidi Learns to Jump

We started working on a jump mechanic for Heidi! Later in the game, it will allow her to clear small cliffs and unlock new areas of the mountain.

Speaking of which… jumping unlocks the next chapter!

📖 Laying Out Act 3

This month we started laying the groundwork for… Act 3!

Elise, our junior animator, modelled and textured Sebastian's cabin and his portable sawmill in Blender, and Sebastian's character sprite is now in the game world with his own animations!

In Act 3, players will be able to produce wooden planks for the first time! Your goats will clear the thorny bushes blocking the forest path, giving Sebastian access to the trees. In return, he'll share wood resources you can turn into planks!

🐑 Angora Goats Are Coming!

In Act 3, you also unlock a new variety of goats: wooly goats!

We adapted our goat animation pipeline to support that: rather than redoing all the animations from scratch, we add angora-specific polygons on top of the existing rig in Godot. This opens up wool-based crafting without the extra workload 🧶

Demo Update! 🐐

Hello everyone!

On March 6th, we launched our very first demo for Heidi's Legacy as part of the Women's Day Sale on Steam - and wow, what a response! Hundreds of you explored the mountains with Heidi, herded goats, and shared your thoughts with us.

We are incredibly grateful for every single review, comment, and piece of feedback. It truly means the world to a small team like ours. 💚

We read everything carefully, and today we are releasing an update to the demo that directly addresses the most common feedback we received. Here is what changed!

Smoother controls 🎮

Many of you pointed out that the game relied too heavily on long-press interactions, and that having them scattered across so many different actions made things feel awkward and slow. We heard you! We removed long-press interactions in several places, including when talking to NPCs, to make the experience feel more natural and responsive.

We also added improved mouse movement support: you can now move Heidi by holding down the left mouse button, which should make exploration feel a lot more comfortable for those of you who prefer mouse-driven controls.

To increase feedback, we also updated the cursor so that its shape now changes when hovering over an interactive element.

A brand new dairy mini-game 🧀

This one was a recurring piece of feedback: many players found it frustrating to only be able to produce one type of dairy product per morning, having to choose between bottled milk, butter, and cheese.

We agreed, and we went back to the drawing board entirely!

The dairy mini-game has been completely redesigned. You now slide tiles across a grid to form matching pairs. Each pair you complete produces one of the three dairy products, and the more pairs you form for a given product, the more of it you will make.

This means you can produce a mix of milk, butter, and cheese in a single session, giving you much more flexibility when it comes to crafting goods and helping the villagers.

We are really happy with how it turned out, and we hope you will enjoy it too!
