Batman: Arkham Asylum is probably one of the best games I've played. Playing it for the first time 15 years after the initial release shows that this is a game that still holds up. A combination of puzzle solving and combo fighting makes sure that the game never feels too tedious, despite it having "forced stealth" sections (in practice, that's what they are) at various points. The boss fights are enjoyable and just hard enough to be a challenge but not impossible.

The story feels like its taken straight from the comics (or Batman the Animated Series, which is where I initially was introduced to Batman and the various villains), where the Joker has escaped and taken over the Arkham Asylum island as part of his evil mastermind plans to once and for all destroy Gotham. Lucky enough Batman is there to stop him and the other inmates. You also get to meet all the classic characters of the Batman universe from Commissioner Gordon to Scarecrow.

The gameplay is what I was very worried about when I started playing this, has it aged well? Does it feel smooth? Can someone who in general sucks at video games still do well? Answer to all of those questions is yes. However, playing with a controller is the key to success here, having to perform combos and handling various gadgets. Speaking of the gadgets, this is truly what makes the game as they are used for both combat and puzzle solving. And their upgrades feels natural and not out of place. Using the gadgets you can destroy various elements in the environment, traverse over the map and grab enemies.

The game also offers possibility to collect various items on the map, which includes interview tapes with the inmate and other background lore to both the characters and Arkham Asylum. This together with the challenge mode adds more playability to the game, because believe me that you don't want to stop playing even if the main storyline is over!

Arkham Asylum feels like the perfect game, especially in the year 2009 where previous games in the genre had felt janky, not as smooth and not as good looking.

You know that feeling when you finally get home after a long day, sit down, and just... beat up 30 guys simultaneously while gliding through a gothic asylum on a creepy island? No? Well, now you will.
